THOUGHTS FOR THIS WEEK
Hanukah 2019 is December 22-30 and there are a few events kicking it off: the Helicopter Gelt Drop and Post Oak Menorah Lighting this Sunday, December 22 at 3pm; the Menorah Lighting at City Hall this Sunday, December 22 at 7pm; and the annual Chanukah Extravaganza at Evelyn’s Park on Monday, December 23, starting at 4:44pm (yep, not sure why that odd time!).
Do you have your New Year’s Eve plans yet? This is Houston, so of course there is a LOT going on for both adults and kids. My PICKS for kids are the Children’s Museum of Houston’s “Rockin’ New Year’s Noon” and CityCentre’s “Noon Year’s Eve.” For adults, I love “Sober Eve” at The Story (have a blast and remember the night!); Shake Russell and friends at Anderson Fair; and “Dancing & Desserts: NYE with Boomtown Brass Band” at the Heights Theater.
I’ll be taking a little vacay from GISH PICKS until the week of January 6, so please enjoy yourselves and have fun exploring Houston on your own! I have a handy dandy list of cool community calendars here so git on out there and enjoy. I also have a link to my round-up of Houston movie theatres open over the holidays - plus a link to a list of recommended films to see over the holidays in my ADULT PICKS below so I have you covered in all ways! In this week’s VIDEO PICK, I talk to you about one of my fave board games, Houstonopoly, as well as one of my fave excerpts from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that encourages reading over watching television (see more about Roald Dahl’s thoughts on tv here). Speaking of my holiday thoughts, hop aboard a time machine to 2008 and see Deborah Duncan of Great Day Houston and I chat about how to create meaningful ones with families, here (be sure to turn the volume up...).
I’m highlighting a different Houston-based nonprofit each week during November and December as a way to help those in need over the holidays. This week’s spotlight is Kids Hope USA, a national nonprofit that works with churches to provide mentoring programs to schools. There is an active Kids Hope volunteer effort at Christ Church Cathedral - to see more about it and get involved, please click here.
And - one final thing: I’m hosting a women’s group on Mondays in January and February at the Spectrum Center and you can see more about it in the PICK below. If you’re interested, please email me and I’d love to have you join us!
