Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, please GO.FIND.FUN. wherever you can, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Hanukah 2019 is December 22-30 and there are a few events kicking it off: the Helicopter Gelt Drop and Post Oak Menorah Lighting this Sunday, December 22 at 3pm; the Menorah Lighting at City Hall this Sunday, December 22 at 7pm; and the annual Chanukah Extravaganza at Evelyn’s Park on Monday, December 23, starting at 4:44pm (yep, not sure why that odd time!).

Do you have your New Year’s Eve plans yet? This is Houston, so of course there is a LOT going on for both adults and kids. My PICKS for kids are the Children’s Museum of Houston’s “Rockin’ New Year’s Noon” and CityCentre’s “Noon Year’s Eve.” For adults, I love Sober Eve” at The Story (have a blast and remember the night!); Shake Russell and friends at Anderson Fair; and Dancing & Desserts: NYE with Boomtown Brass Band at the Heights Theater.

I’ll be taking a little vacay from GISH PICKS until the week of January 6, so please enjoy yourselves and have fun exploring Houston on your own! I have a handy dandy list of cool community calendars here so git on out there and enjoy. I also have a link to my round-up of Houston movie theatres open over the holidays - plus a link to a list of recommended films to see over the holidays in my ADULT PICKS below so I have you covered in all ways! In this week’s VIDEO PICK, I talk to you about one of my fave board games, Houstonopoly, as well as one of my fave excerpts from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that encourages reading over watching television (see more about Roald Dahl’s thoughts on tv here). Speaking of my holiday thoughts, hop aboard a time machine to 2008 and see Deborah Duncan of Great Day Houston and I chat about how to create meaningful ones with families, here (be sure to turn the volume up...).

I’m highlighting a different Houston-based nonprofit each week during November and December as a way to help those in need over the holidays. This week’s spotlight is Kids Hope USA, a national nonprofit that works with churches to provide mentoring programs to schools. There is an active Kids Hope volunteer effort at Christ Church Cathedral - to see more about it and get involved, please click here.

And - one final thing: I’m hosting a women’s group on Mondays in January and February at the Spectrum Center and you can see more about it in the PICK below. If you’re interested, please email me and I’d love to have you join us!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Stay tuned here for more details! My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for FAMILY PICKS and our Facebook page for ADULT PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me: I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of December 20 - 22, 2019
Picks for Adults the Weekend of December 20 - 22, 2019

Theater Under The Stars/TUTS

Here’s a fun way to wrap up the holidays: go see “Elf - The Musical,” presented by TUTS through this Sunday, December 22. Based on the cherished 2003 movie, the Broadway hit tells the story of Buddy, a human accidentally transported to the North Pole as a baby. Unaware of his heritage, Buddy’s enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth of his past. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father. Tickets start at $40 and can be purchased here.

Gish at the Movies

There are so many terrific and *unique* movie venues in town that I decided to post a list of the ones that are showing films over the holidays on my GISH AT THE MOVIES page, here. You'll have to head to the theatre’s websites for full schedules -- their fare is both mainstream and indie so be brave, my friend! And here’s an Esquire article recommending mainstream films being shown over the holidays. My fave so far is KNIVES's super fun and great for the whole family (its rating is PG13).

Deck the Halls Parade

“The Nutcracker” is a popular show in Houston every holiday season! Here’s my round-up for ya: the Houston Ballet is presenting it through December 29 (more info here); Kennedy Dance Theatre presents it this Saturday, December 21 (more info here); Allegro Ballet of Houston presents it this Saturday and Sunday (more info here); “Houston’s Urban Nutcracker” is this Sunday, December 22; and the “Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker” will be here with 2 shows on Saturday, December 28.

El Rincon Social

This Saturday, December 21 from 7-11pm, enjoy El Rincón Social's annual Open Studios event at 3210 Preston Street. All resident artists will open their studio doors for the community to meet artists, tour studios, and browse and purchase original artworks. El Rincón Social (The Social Corner) is an artist's collaborative/warehouse studio and exhibition venue where artists sustain a creative ecosystem that allows for personal artistic growth while nurturing a proactive relationship with their community.

HITS Theatre

Inspire your kids by taking them to see the kid performers in “Disney’s Frozen Junior” at HITS this Friday, December 20 and Saturday, December 21. The company’s sixth through twelfth grade students will perform in this year’s holiday production, which is based on the 2018 Broadway musical, and brings Elsa, Anna, and the magical land of Arendelle to life. The show features all of the memorable songs from the animated film, with five new songs written for the Broadway production. Tickets are $15/adults and $5/students and can be purchased here.

ComedySportz Houston

This Friday and Saturday (December 20 and 21), ComedySportz has shows at 8pm (as they do every weekend!). From their website: “Because everything is improvised, no two matches are alike. Fans never see the same thing twice, and they return again and again to cheer on their favorite players. The audience helps pick what games the teams will play, yells suggestions and ultimately decides which team is the evening's winner. It's always fast, always funny and every show is appropriate for all, ages 6 and up.” Get your tickets here.

Women will gather in community with me at the Spectrum Center Houston for 6 Mondays from 6:30-8pm to explore their personal life path using the “12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily” concepts from my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project. You can see the 12 concepts here and the key words which we’ll explore through a variety of ways are TRUST * NOURISH * MEDITATE * COMMUNE * LISTEN * LOVE * SERVE * FORGIVE * THANK * CREATE * LEARN * LAUGH. You’ll dig deep with this focused time on YOU and self-love will be at the center of all we do. There will be art, journaling, talking, laughing, labyrinth-walking, and more! At the first meeting, you’ll be given a journal and a special set of the 12 Ways cards to use daily. Each woman will also create an easy-to-remember personal mantra to use and, during the last session, will make a bracelet with her favorite word of the 12 to take home.

The cost for the series is $200 ($205 if paying via credit card; no fee if you pay via Zelle or Venmo). If you’re interested, please email me and I’d love to have you join us!
