Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

This week’s GISH PICKS is chock full of info so I’ll let you dive right in. In addition to the weekend PICKS, I’ve got info on a children’s Spanish winter camp and a super cool art camp plus some holiday shopping ideas – so you can drop the kids at the Crossing Borders Language Center or City ArtWorks and go shop.

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Adults the Weekend of December 9-11, 2016

It’s a Wonderful Life

This year’s holiday entry from HGO is It’s a Wonderful Life,” onstage now through December 17. The movie is one of my faves so I can easily imagine how special it will be set to music.

It’s time for that wonderful holiday tradition – the 54th Annual Candlelight Tour at the Heritage Society – taking place this Saturday, December 10 from 3-9pm and Sunday, December 11 from 4-8pm. Stroll through their historic buildings and Sam Houston Park while enjoying Santa’s Workshop, Jesse Jones Park historic re-enactors at Old Place as well as a blacksmith and soap maker and special holiday treats.

Panto Wonderful Wizard

The annual Panto presentation at Stages is back this year with “Panto Wonderful Wizard,” in which Oz meets Pantoland and Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion all skip down the Yellow Brick Road together. It was written by Houston’s own Rutherford Cravens and it runs through December 31, with special Panto family fun days and Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve matinees at 10am and 2pm.

Bring your kids (18 months to 8 years old) to the Spanish Winter Camp offered by Crossing Borders Language Center. They have locations in Pearland and Houston and the camps take place December 19-30, 9am-3pm with extended hours before and after camp in the Houston location. Participants will get to examine various customs and traditions that are celebrated around the world and will enjoy stories, festive treats, caroling, and crafts. The cost is $245/week for children 18 months to 3 years old and $230/week for 4-8 year olds in Houston and $200/week for kids 18 months to 8 years old in Pearland. Registration for camps at both locations is here.

City ArtWorks

Kids 5-12 years old can get creative the week of December 19 at the City ArtWorks Winter Studio Classes. Classes are from 10am-noon daily and the theme is “Color of the Seasons.” Kids will enjoy playing with a variety of materials and working together in a cozy studio. City ArtWorks offers year-round classes and annual summer camps and their expert artists will teach the kids how to get creative while sneaking in educational concepts. The camps are December 19-23 (five days) and are $130/one-week session. To register and for more information, please click here.

This holiday season, step away from the commercial, cookie cutter, big chain stores and head to museums or smaller independent spots. I have five places to recommend to you and this week’s VIDEO PICK showcases two of them.

  • The Asher Gallery, located within Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, is a remarkable destination to find the perfect gift, collect the newest artist, and learn more about artists and craft making. The shop features an exceptional variety of unique jewelry, ceramics, glass, home décor, handbags and clothing—all made by local and national craft artists.

  • Lucia’s Garden is celebrating 32 years of Christmas cheer and is having a special 25% off holiday sale this weekend. I sell my IGNITE YOUR LIFE!” bracelets there so stop by for a visit and to purchase some!

  • The gift shop at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston offers a curated selection of artful gifts, prints, jewelry, books, toys, and more. No need to pay Museum admission—it's always free to visit the MFAH Shop.

  • The Museum of Printing History suffered extreme damages from a fire and is still closed for repairs. In the meantime, they have a very clever fundraiser: they’re selling a beautiful limited edition “West Clay Scarf” (named after the street they’re on) through their website. All the details are here.

  • Unity of Houston has a very special bookshop with spiritual gifts of all kinds – books, scarves, and more – and I sell my “IGNITE YOUR LIFE!” bracelets there too! Stop by and check out the church events and services while you’re there.

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
