Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

Want to increase the peace in your life? MEDITATE DAILY, my friend. Studies have shown that if you spend at least 12 minutes per day in quiet meditation, you’ll improve your memory and concentration dramatically, and anxiety and depression are reduced. Starting your day out with some focused quiet time will help you deal with the craziness out there – especially at this holiday time! I have found labyrinths to be a terrific form of meditation for me because of the walking. The movement helps me center and focus. I’ll be leading a labyrinth walk this Saturday, December 8 from 9-11am (more details are here and below) and I would LOVE it if you could join me! It’s at the beautiful Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston. Your first class is free and parking is nearby and also free.

There are also meditation events happening around town, including at two museums. The Asia Society Texas Center is hosting the Insight Meditation Houston group each week on Mondays through December 17 (see details here) and The Health Museum will be hosting mindfulness classes for families starting January 13 and for adults starting January 23 (see details here). There are also several other groups hosting meditation gatherings; here are a few: Chung Tai Zen Center; Dawn Mountain; Houston Zen Center; Jade Buddha Temple’s English Dharma Group; KMC Houston; Mindful Living with Micki Fine; Mindfulness Practice Community of Houston; Rothko Chapel; Tergar Houston Practice Group; and Unity of Houston. Beginners are always welcome!

And so, the holidays are here. There is a plethora of celebrations from many faiths and cultures and even non-faith-based groups and communities of friends. One website I found, Religious Tolerance, estimates that there are around 29 celebrations of some sort between November 1 and January 15. That’s a lot of partying and gathering and praying! And the Anti-Defamation League’s handy dandy “Calendar of Observances” offers information on a multitude of year-round commemorations. In our diverse city, there will be so many ways to experience these traditions first-hand. One of the things I loved to do with my kids when they were younger was to take them to the multicultural Seasons of Sharing exhibit at the Children’s Museum. More about that exhibit is below.

Whatever you celebrate as we glide into winter, I hope that you will take some time to enjoy your family and friends – and also to meditate. I swear all of that will ignite your life!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Stay tuned here for more details! My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for FAMILY PICKS and our Facebook page for ADULT PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me: I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of December 7-9, 2018
Picks for Adults the Weekend of December 7-9, 2018

Seasons of Sharing

Ramadan, Diwali, Hanukkah, Las Posadas, Christmas in Norway, Kwanzaa, and the Lunar New Year will be represented in Houston’s only multicultural holiday exhibit for children, Seasons of Sharing.” These seven celebrations come together in a block-long neighborhood of houses that light the way through the holiday season using dipa lamps, menorahs, luminarias, kinaras, Christmas lights, and the crescent moon. Each house will represent one of the holidays observed annually in households around the world and there will be a different cultural holiday spotlighted with fun activities daily.

Candlelight Tour

The Heritage Society in Sam Houston Park is excited to announce that they are relaunching their 55th anniversary Candlelight Tour,” one of Houston’s most keenly anticipated holiday traditions. After a one-year hiatus due to Hurricane Harvey, you can once again travel back in time on one night only – this Saturday, December 8, 5-9pm. Visitors can stroll through cozy historic homes and celebrate the season over a warm hearth. The glow of our modern downtown provides a unique backdrop for a tranquil holiday experience in Houston’s oldest park. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door; please click here to purchase tickets.

Where the Wild Things Art: Children’s Book Art Show & Book Fair

This Friday, December 7, from 7-11pm, Insomnia Gallery is hosting its first ever show paying homage to special works of children's literature. Where the Wild Things Art: Children’s Book Art Show & Book Fair takes place at the Gallery at 708 Telephone Road. There will be over 30 Houston artists showcasing their work and a book fair to complement the show. Everyone is welcome and there will be food and drink available for purchase.

The Wondrous Gift is Given: Christmas at the Villa

Each holiday season, the Houston Chamber Choir presents a beautiful concert at the Villa de Matel. This year’s performances will take place this Friday, December 7, 7:30pm; Saturday, December 8, 3:30pm & 7:30pm; and Sunday, December 9, 7:30pm (the Sunday matinee show is sold out). The Wondrous Gift is Given: Christmas at the Villa features beloved carols and other works, performed in the serene beauty of the Chapel of the Villa de Matel. Joining the Houston Chamber Choir for the matinee performances is the Treble Choir of Houston at Christ Church Cathedral and the evening performances will feature the wildly talented Apollo Chamber Players, a Houston based string quartet. Please purchase your tickets here.

Free Forest School of Houston

This is such a great concept: the Free Forest School of Houston is a playgroup whose focus is nature and the outdoors. The free group is open to young children (ages 0-6) and their parents or caregivers. It’s a welcoming and non-judgmental group where the adults can practice giving children space and autonomy to explore and create in nature. Free Forest School of Houston meets weekly throughout the year at nearby wilderness areas. The group shares a snack, takes a hike, plays in the woods, and has circle time. FFSH is part of a national org, Free Forest School.

This Saturday, December 8, from 7-10pm, one of my fave places in town, the Art Car Museum, is hosting the opening of their annual open call exhibition. This year the theme is Animals and the show is on view through February 24. The themes chosen are always interpreted in a myriad of ways and expressed in all media, giving the viewer many interesting perspectives that may not otherwise come to mind. The Art Car Museum is pleased to provide a space for artists to express their opinions, always creating a lively dialogue. The opportunity to view one hundred different artists in a world-class, destination museum is a boon to both artists and the public. Plus, the opening party is ALWAYS a blast!

GUIDANCE SESSIONS (Mondays) and LABYRINTH WALKS (Second Saturdays)

I offer intuitive guidance sessions every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 10:30am-5:30pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. Let’s connect if you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both). I use my intuitive skills and my many years of studying people to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams and desires, and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. Finding your personal mission will exponentially increase your ability to succeed in life while also attracting an abundance of joy. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at ‪713.993.0550 to book an appointment. NEW: I am now doing guidance sessions by telephone – we can connect from anywhere, anytime! Call me at 713.492.1173 for more information about that service. Please note that the fee for sessions by phone is the same.

And if you’re looking for a way to increase the peace in your life, please join me for our Second Saturday Labyrinth Walks at the beautiful Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston at 500 Fannin Street. My next walk will be THIS SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8, 9am-11am. Free parking is available in the Christ Church Cathedral garage at 559 San Jacinto Street; bring your ticket in to get it validated. We are creating quite a community with these monthly walks – join us! New people will tour the center and we’ll all walk the labyrinth and make art. I am a trained labyrinth facilitator and love sharing what I know with others. Register for the walk here or at the door. You’ll leave with something you’ve made, a list of Houston area labyrinths, and a handout on the art of walking labyrinths. If you’d like to read more about my work and Houston labyrinths, click here for a recent article in the Houston Chronicle.
