READY FOR A GREAT WEEKEND?!

Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Well, we have elected a new President – FINALLY! I know my readers are all over the political spectrum and this is not a blog about politics but about cultural events and showing off all that makes Houston great. But I have to share my concerns with you about Donald Trump as President because he is a man that has offended almost every demographic in our country, especially women and immigrants (see more about that here and here). He’s also made fun of disabled people; put down veterans; called Mexicans rapists, criminals, drug dealers, and bad hombres; has mocked his own voters; and doesn’t even run his business that well).

There is now a thing called “The Trump Effect that was documented by the Southern Poverty Law Center as something affecting kids – and in the days since Trump has been elected, the effect is already being felt – with kids shouting about “building a wall”) and adults who have been bullied.

It’s easy to go about our lives and enjoy the arts and culture of Houston but I also feel it’s important that we examine what just happened and take it all in and, if we are unhappy, take steps to make change. I’m looking around and taking action where I can and I hope you will too! One thing I am doing is hosting a Labyrinth Walk for Peace on “Black Friday,” the day after Thanksgiving, November 25, from 1-4pm. I just spent a week immersed in labyrinths and am now convinced, MORE THAN EVER, that they are truly a path to peace. Walking a labyrinth leads to a calmer energy in the body, healthier brains, conflict resolution, and so much more. If you’d like to hear more of my thoughts on labyrinths, listen here to this recent “Houston Matters” interview. I was so happy to do an audio labyrinth walk and to share my love for this meditative tool. If you’d like to learn about all the labyrinths in Houston, click here for our handy dandy list. Heading out of town and still want to walk a labyrinth? Then check out the Worldwide Labyrinth Locator. They have more than 5,000 labyrinths from around the world in there!

On Tuesday of last week I had the pleasure of driving people to the polls. A news crew followed me and, in the end, we decided that a vote for ART CARS was really the best vote! It was fun for all of us to run around in my Phoenix Rising Art Car – click here for the news story. I hope you’ll consider doing that for the next election, no matter which side you are on.

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Labyrinty Walk for Peace

LABYRINTH WALK FOR PEACE

It's been a rough election season and it's time for some PEACE surrounding it. One of the best ways to enjoy peace is to walk a labyrinth. I am bringing a pop-up chakra prism labyrinth to the Pop Up Peace Fest at the Live Oak Friends Meeting House at 1318 W. 26th Street on Friday, November 25. Walking it will calm your mind, soothe your frazzled nerves, and help make a global shift in the planet. It's long been known that changing the energy changes the world and that's what we'll do with this walk. The labyrinth will be available for your use from 1-4pm and I will guide you with instructions on how to walk it. WE WILL GET THROUGH ALL OF THIS!

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend.
