Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting! AND – lucky you, I’ll be posting them here as my weekly VIDEO PICK when I can.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKSand our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

I’ve never really been interested in sports all that much but with the Astros in the World Series, I have found my passion for sports! Apparently, others in the arts have as well – check out this week’s VIDEO PICK, featuring a fun polka for Jose Altuve and this article about some friendly Los Angeles/Houston rivalries.

There is plenty of art out there for us all to enjoy this weekend – for families, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is holding their annual “Family Festival” this Saturday and there are still some “Día de los Muertos” exhibitions up, listed below. Next weekend and week (November 3-7) is the “The National Women’s Conference: Taking 1977 into the 21st Century so click on the banner above for more about that important event.

And finally: I’ve got two events at which I would LOVE to see you – Cultured Cocktails for IGNITE YOUR LIFE!” at Bar Boheme next Thursday, November 9 and my “Second Saturday Labyrinth” walk at the Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer next Saturday, November 11, 10am-noon.

Please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Hands-On Houston Family Festival: Focus on Fiber!

This Saturday, November 4, from 11am-3pm, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is hosting their annual Hands-On Houston Family Festival: Focus on Fiber! This free community event is part of a monthly hands-on craft activity experience for families and visitors of all ages. This year’s Festival celebrates fiber with hands-on activities, demonstrations by local artists, and more!

Ofrenda for Geoffrey Gish

Casa Ramirez is a quaint retail shop which has a beautiful display of altars created each year by people in honor of their loved ones who passed (pictured is my altar for my brother Geoffrey Gish). Owners Chrissie and Macario always host a procession and several workshops prior to the opening of the ofrenda exhibition (find those here), which this year will be up through November 10.

An Evening with the Vienna Boys Choir

Brilliant Lectures Series presents An Evening with the Vienna Boys Choir this Saturday, November 4 at 7:30pm at Houston Baptist University. This exclusive Houston performance will feature the world-renowned remarkable young men who have delighted music-lovers with their purity of tone and distinctive charm. The diverse repertoire for the evening will include Austrian folk songs and waltzes, classical masterpieces, medieval chant, and popular music. Tickets are $35-$125 and can be purchased here; be sure to plug in promotion code “GISH” for 50% off!

Rhythmic Movement

Every Friday night through November 17, join Tracie Jackson for Rhythmic Movement at NiaMoves. I tried it out recently and it’s a blast! We learned the unique movements of West African dance while also stretching and enjoying drums. The class is $10 and there will be a special Master Class on Friday, November 10 for $15.

The Tape Art Crew

Families can get involved in creating and learning about art with The Tape Art Crew, a Rhode Island-based artist collective. They’ll be in Houston this weekend – November 4-7 – to create murals and offer workshops courtesy the Houston Arts Alliance (see the list of events here). Kids will learn the value of something as ordinary as tape and everyone will get to see unique site-specific works of art!

Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play

Obsidian Theater presents Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play” through November 18. In this dark comedy, a group of survivors try to recount an episode of “The Simpsons” after a global catastrophe...seventy-five years later, “The Simpsons” story has become almost religion-like. Tickets to this unique journey through a post-apocalyptic world are $30/adults and $20/students.

Ignite Your Life!

My art project, IGNITE YOUR LIFE!, will be the beneficiary of a portion of funds from the weekly Fresh Arts Cultured Cocktails event at Bar Boheme. My project is now a nonprofit, I9NITE!, Inc., and this is our first foray into fundraising. Help us make it a success by stopping by next Thursday, November 9, 5-8pm!

Second Saturday Labyrinth Walk

Join me on Saturday, November 11, from 10-11:50am for my monthly Second Saturday Labyrinth Walk at the beautiful Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston. We’ll tour the center, walk the labyrinth, and make art. I am a trained labyrinth facilitator and love sharing what I know with others! Register for the walk here or at the door. You’ll leave with your art, a list of Houston area labyrinths, and a handout on walking labyrinths.

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. It’s #GishPicks #CuratedCulture to help you plan your weekend! I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
