Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting! AND – lucky you, I’ll be posting them here as my weekly VIDEO PICK when I can.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKSand our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

As things seem to get quieter post-Harvey, Houstonians have become VERY LOUD for the Astros. I’m not a big sports fan (hence my focus on culture here and in most of my writings) – however, I am definitely caught up in the fever. I envision our team winning the World Series, all the way! It’ll be especially meaningful after all we’ve been through. Here’s the schedule in case you need it. Get on your orange and let’s gooooo Astros!

The biggest damages from hurricane Harvey are mostly being taken care of but there are many folks still struggling, especially in poorer neighborhoods and those outside of Harris County. I’ve been providing information on resources since the hurricane hit – from childcare to volunteer and donation opportunities – and I’ve been honored to do that and am so grateful that it’s helped so many of you. I will be consolidating that info-sharing into one banner here so please click on the “Harvey Relief” graphic each week and I’ll link it to a different organization, video, and more for you to check out. I’m so happy to be able to continue providing information while making sure we have enough room for the weekly PICKS. Thanks for following along and please share the links that I post so we can help the largest number of people. Be sure to check out this week’s VIDEO PICK of a local pastor playing his piano in flood waters. It’s very moving.

There’s one more thing I want to point out to you before I head into the PICKS. Parents ask me all the time where their kids can volunteer – and it’s been hard to find places. A clever high school senior, Claire Furse, realized this need and decided to create a website focused on teen volunteer opportunities, Serve for Good. Check it out and you’ll see how cool it is!

Have a great weekend and Happy Halloween and Día de los Muertos!

Please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Annual Día de los Muertos

It’s hard to believe it’s the 30th anniversary of the Lawndale Art Center’s Annual Día de los Muertos! Their celebration runs from October 27 – November 2 and will include an exhibition of tin retablos by local artists (including my piece!) and a special free “Family Day Fiesta” on Saturday, October 28, 11am-4pm. Food trucks will be located onsite.

Direct Path to Detour

Direct Path to Detour is a new dance work by Portland-based choreographer Takahiro Yamamoto that will be at DiverseWorks this Friday, October 27, Saturday, October 28, and Sunday, October 29. Celebrate a Family Fair – International Archaeology Day at the Houston Museum of Natural Science this Saturday, October 28 from 10am-4pm.
