Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Have you ever wondered what is going on with Houston’s night sky? Wonder no more because I found this terrific website that will give you details about the planets and stars for every minute of the evening. It’s really fun to look up and notice what’s going on out there – and it makes a great activity for adults AND kids. My VIDEO PICK this week is super fun – it’s news coverage of a UFO sighting here back in 2014, giving you one more thing to look for in our night sky!

And so…we have a crazy election swirling around us, getting crazier by the minute. I’ve got a favorite candidate and I hope you do, too. I plan to vote and I hope you will, too. Early voting is October 24-November 4 and the deadline to register was October 11 so I hope you didn’t miss it! You can get all the info about early voting sites and polling places here and info about the issues and candidates from the League of Women Voters here. Voting is an important right (and, hey, if you’re a woman, it’s even more important since we’ve only had it since 1920 and this year is a pivotal one for women). We all have a voice and it’s important to be heard. This weekend, there’s another chance to be heard if you’re concerned about too much testing in our schools and other issues. Find out more about the Houston Education and Civil Rights Summit here.

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of October 14-16, 2016
Picks for Adults the Weekend of October 14-16, 2016

10th Annual KBR Kids Day

Families can explore nature, take pontoon boat rides, rent bikes and canoes, and enjoy much more family fun at the 10th Annual KBR Kids Day at The Water Works at Buffalo Bayou Park this Saturday, October 15, from 11am-3pm.

Of Peace and Protest

Of Peace and Protest is a beautiful musical tribute to the displaced and to those seeking refuge from the clutches of totalitarianism. The show is on Saturday, October 15 at 8pm.

Dorothy in Wonderland

Beginning this weekend and running through October 30, Dorothy in Wonderland is onstage with 3pm matinees. It’s the fun story of the characters in Oz meeting the ones in Wonderland.

Sassy Mamas

It’s been an amazing forty years for the Ensemble Theater and their upcoming season looks great. Sassy Mamas -- the story of three women and their loves -- closes this weekend, on Sunday, October 16.

Houston Fire Fest

It’s time for the annual Houston Fire Fest this Saturday, October 15 from 10am-5pm. Taking place at the Val Jahnke Training Facility, the Fest features live fire demos, firefighters, antique cars and fire trucks, and more.

Comedy Dance Festival

Suchu Dance presents the Comedy Dance Festival this weekend and next weekend. Dance shouldn’t be stuffy and dreary and this festival proves that.

Mindfulness for Young Adults

If you have a teen at home, I feel your pain. They are not easy creatures! They are complicated, emotional, confused…and AMAZING. If you’ve got a teen that is looking for a life hack for the rest of their life, send them to Dawn Mountain this fall for a fantastic 6 weeks of learning about mindfulness, compassion, forgiveness, and more. They’ll be in the company of other high schoolers and will learn things not taught in most schools. The end result will be less stress, increased feelings of well-being, improved school performance, and better sleep. The course is on Sundays from 2-3:30pm from October 16-November 20 and the fees start at $120 for all 6 weeks.

Words of Wisdom Talk: Exploring Houston's Wildly Diverse Folklife Scene

Join me for the final Words of Wisdom/WOW talk on Friday, October 28, noon-1pm at the Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer. Pat Jasper, director of Houston Arts Alliance (HAA)'s Folklife + Civic Engagement department, will talk about the artistic and cultural traditions of our city’s tremendously diverse and various communities and how they address the needs of all residents through engagement, citizen-driven initiatives, and equitable community outcomes. PLEASE ENROLL IN ADVANCE HERE (choose your specific date by clicking on "Schedule and Enrollment Info).

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. It’s #GishPicks #CuratedCulture to help you plan your weekend! I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support. If you'd like to learn more, please click below.
