Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

I have healed my life with recovery and with labyrinths - so I am thrilled to let you know about two events for each! We are so lucky in Houston that there is a great interest in self-exploration and living a life of sobriety.

I love labyrinths so much that I decided (after over a decade of walking and enjoying them!) to take my journey to the next level by becoming a Certified Veriditas Labyrinth Facilitator and I’m so grateful I did. I learned about labyrinths, I connected with a like-minded spiritual community, and I dove deeper into why I wanted to explore labyrinths. I was able to see that my meditation practice with them quieted my mind and gave me inner peace like nothing ever had before. And after all of that, I felt compelled to share what I learned - which I do as a certified person. It’s made a huge difference in my practice and for that I am grateful.

So here is a full circle thing: there will be a Labyrinth Facilitator Training in Houston the weekend of Saturday, November 2 -- and I’m leading a Hines Center Labyrinth Walk the following weekend, on Saturday, November 9. You can learn the practice and then do the practice! I hope you’ll be able to do both - more details are below. Another full circle thing is that my VIDEO PICK this week is a TEDxKids talk on labyrinths by my friend Eliza Pillsbury. She is a remarkable and poised college woman who shares my love of the circular path. I led her on her very first walk and now I’m watching her lead others. That’s the beauty of life!

As many of you may know, I have been sober since 1985 (see my story here) and I am VERY grateful for recovery organizations and sober friends who have helped me make it thus far. Two of my favorite organizations in Houston - The Council on Recovery and Archway Academy - are getting ready to host their annual fundraising luncheons at the end of this month. Check below for all the information. They are always such positive, lively events (a room full of sober adult and teen addicts, and those who love them, is a happy place indeed).  I hope you’ll join me - I’ll be at both events, coffee cup in hand.

Heads up to moms & dads: Miller Outdoor Theatre is presenting “Rumplestiltskin” next Wednesday (10/16) and Thursday (10/17) at 11am. It’s open seating (no tickets needed) so pack your snacks and go see a FREE show!

Have a great weekend and GO.FIND.FUN. wherever you can!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Stay tuned here for more details! My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for FAMILY PICKS and our Facebook page for ADULT PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me: I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of October 11 - 13, 2019
Picks for Adults the Weekend of October 11 - 13, 2019

Buffalo Bayou Partnership

I have great respect for all the hard work that the Buffalo Bayou Partnership does to take care of Houston’s signature waterway...and I love their commitment to families. This Saturday, October 12 from 11am-3pm, head to Guadalupe Plaza Park for their annual free “KBR Kids’ Day” event. There will be hands-on activities from over 20 Houston partners, local entertainment and performers, Dia de los Muertos face painters, balloon artists, a rock climbing wall, a birds of prey show, and a Halloween Costume Parade. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Frame Dance

If you have never been to a dragon boat regatta, go you must! They are super fun and lively - and I found it very inspiring to see people of all ages take on the water en masse. This weekend - Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13 - it’s time for the annual “Gulf Coast International Dragon Boat Regatta” at 1 Fluor Daniel Drive in Sugar Land (Brooks Lake). Click here for the event schedule - there will be plenty of races all day long, both days, as well as entertainment by arts groups such as the Texas Teo Chew Association and Dance of Asian America. The event is free and open to the public and is great outdoor fun!

Asia Society Texas Center

This Saturday, October 12 from 10am-1pm, head to the Asia Society Texas Center to celebrate “Health and Sports Day,” a national holiday in Japan commemorating the 1964 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo and encouraging healthy lifestyles. The Asia Society is celebrating with their own free family event - “Japanese Sports Day” -- as the museum building is transformed into a fieldhouse for everyone to learn about the sports culture of Japan, play games, visit the 2020 Tokyo Olympic booth, make Japanese sports signs and kites, learn traditional folk dances, and enjoy Japanese food!

Sculpture Month Houston (SMH)

SMH is an organization that hosts a citywide festival showcasing sculpture in various venues; this year’s event is October 12 through November 30. This festival was founded in 2016 and highlights the diverse creative energies of artists and sculptors through a variety of shows and events. This Saturday, October 12, from 6-9pm, SMH kicks off with the exhibition “Outta Space” at SITE Gallery Houston in Sawyer Yards -- all the info about the event is here. There will be site-specific installations at the Gallery as well as at the 1940 Air Terminal Museum and City Hall.

Czech Center Museum Houston

Who says kids can’t enjoy a good Oktoberfest?! The Czech Center Museum is hosting a fun “Kids’ Oktoberfestthis Saturday, October 12, from 1-4pm at their beautiful venue (plan extra time to tour the museum!). The event will begin at 1pm and will feature street art, crafting, face-painting, balloon art, and a puppet show about a Czech Fairy tale, “The Wooden Maiden,” at 2pm. Parents can also explore the museum and relax with a Czech beer while the children enjoy activities and games. Tickets are $8/adults and $5/children 12 and under.

Rice Theatre Program

Rice University Theatre presents William Shakespeare’s pastoral comedy “As You Like It,” opening this weekend with shows on October 11, 12, and 17-19 at 8pm, and a matinee this Sunday, October 13 at 3pm. All performances will take place in Hamman Hall located on Rice University campus. The story follows Rosalind as she and her cousin, Celia, run away to the Forest of Arden, after which adventures follow.  The production is directed by Christina Keefe, head of the Rice Theatre Program, assisted by Alan Brincks. Tickets are $10/each.

Learn more about the magical path of labyrinths in the Veriditas Facilitator Training with Master Teacher Kay Mutert at First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street, on Saturday, November 2 and Sunday, November 3. The goal of the Veriditas Labyrinth Facilitator Training is to prepare people to introduce others to the labyrinth in an articulate, professional, and effective way. The training addresses meditative walking in a variety of settings, with a variety of different populations. Walking the labyrinth is being embraced as a spiritual practice throughout the Western world mostly because of Veriditas trained facilitators. The Veriditas Facilitator Training -- which began in 1997 -- remains the most rigorous and comprehensive training offered. The fee for the course is $600 and you can register here.

Hines Center for Spirituality & Prayer

Head into the holidays with peace in your heart, and take some time to reflect on how you want to end 2019 as you join me (a Certified Veriditas Labyrinth Facilitator) for my last 2019 Hines Center Labyrinth Walk on Saturday, November 9 from 10am-noon. We’ll meditate and get centered together through an inspirational reading, a group labyrinth walk, and reflective art-making. I’ll give tours of the Hines Center to newcomers and each attendee will receive a helpful list of other Houston area labyrinths and a labyrinth walking guide. Please note that the walk is donation-based.
