Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

It's fall which means the start of Houston’s art season, yippee! There is so much out there to explore with hundreds of arts groups and a gazillion (almost) events each week – this is, of course, why I curate culture for GISH PICKS! If you want to jump into the art scene head first, come to this month’s WOW Talk – Exploring Houston’s Wildly Diverse Arts Scene” with Jonathon Glus, director of the Houston Arts Alliance. He’ll tell you all and will get you excited about enjoying our smorgasbord of events and groups. Our high schools are also gearing up for their new season of arts – you can catch many shows for a bargain price! Lamar High School has only two shows of "Competition Piece" this weekend (Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8 at 7pm) and they’ll be presenting their annual musical, "Little Shop of Horrors," in the spring. High School for the Performing and Visual Arts/HSPVA is presenting the musical "Urinetown" this weekend and next; Kinkaid School has "You Can't Take it With You" next weekend; and Episcopal High School has "As You Like It" October 28-30.

There are two recovery-related luncheons coming up this month so mark your calendars now. Archway Academy, Houston’s largest sober high school, is hosting Hugh Guill on Tuesday, October 24 and The Council on Recovery is hosting “Wonder Woman” Lynda Carter on Friday, October 28. All the details are below.

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

The Council on Recovery Fall Luncheon with Lynda Carter

Hugh Guill

Native Houstonian Hugh Guill will be the keynote speaker at this year’s annual fall luncheon on Tuesday, October 25, 11:30am for Archway Academy. Hugh went to private schools in Houston and got his degree from Kenyon College. After teaching for a few years in Denver, he returned to Houston to become the Principal of YES Prep Gulfton at the age of 26. In the summer of 2014, Hugh resigned to recover from his alcoholism and other addictions and turned his life around. Today he is the New Schools Coordinator for the Association of Recovery Schools. He now leverages his past experiences to build high quality high schools, like Archway, across the country. He will be sharing his story of experience, strength, and hope.
