Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

It's a busy time of year (and is about to get busier!) so be sure to take a break. If you are a parent of small kiddos and need a break, learn about the Children’s Museum’s “Mommy Mingle” in this week’s VIDEO PICK, which is a time for kids to play and the adults to relax and chat. The next one is next Wednesday, October 5 from 10am-noon. GISH PICKS is the media sponsor of the event so I’ll be there armed with info about Houston for families – stop by and say howdy! The Children’s Museum is busy this month in their “Tot Spot” with fun activities such as making fabric pumpkins and monster puppets every Thursday from 1-3pm. For adults that need a break, I highly recommend checking out what the Ruah Center has to offer. I recently took a tour because I will be hosting a labyrinth walk there next year and I was grateful to see such a beautiful and peaceful space in the heart of Houston. And, finally, if your teens need a break, sign them up for the relaxing Mindfulness for Young Adults” course that starts Sunday, October 16. All the details about that are below.

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Adults September 29-October 2, 2016

Mid-Autumn Festival

Bring the kids and enjoy a fall family festival in the style of Asian moon or lantern festivals! This Saturday, October 1 from 1-4pm, the Mid-Autumn Festival features Taiwanese storytelling, performances, bubble tea, and exciting art activities such as lantern-making and calligraphy presented by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Labyrinth Walk

Join me this Saturday, October 1 from 10am-noon for a peaceful labyrinth walk in the Medical Center at the UTHealth School of Nursing. It’s a shady labyrinth and we’ll enjoy an inspirational reading and making art. If you’re really into labyrinths, check out our list of over 20 Houston area labyrinths here.

It’s “Hispanic Heritage Month” through October 15 so Arte Público Press, the Houston Public Library, and other organizations are throwing a party this Saturday, October 1 from 1-5pm at the 5th annual LibroFEST. The event is free and spotlights Latino books, art, history, and culture through library presentations, activities, performances, and more.

History of Houston’s Musical Soul

The History of Houston’s Musical Soul is a three-day binge of Houston, music, and history this weekend from September 30 through October 2. There will be zydeco and blues plus happenings at the Continental Club and the newly-renovated Deluxe Theatre.

Blessing of the Animals

On Sunday, October 2, several organizations are hosting “Blessing of the Animals” events, which is a celebration of the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. Participants include the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, and Christ Church Cathedral.

Whistle Down the Wind

The Queensbury Theatre is closing out Whistle Down the Wind” this weekend, which is a show with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber that is based upon the novel by Mary Haley Bell and the 1961 film of the same name. This little-known show with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber follows the fortunes of a fugitive caught between the prejudice of adults and the innocence of the young.

Mindfulness for Young Adults

If you have a teen at home, I feel your pain. They are not easy creatures! They are complicated, emotional, confused…and AMAZING. If you’ve got a teen that is looking for a life hack for the rest of their life, send them to Dawn Mountain this fall for a fantastic 6 weeks of learning about mindfulness, compassion, forgiveness, and more. They’ll be in the company of other high schoolers and will learn things not taught in most schools. The end result will be less stress, increased feelings of well-being, improved school performance, and better sleep. The course is on Sundays from 2-3:30pm from October 16-November 20 and the fees start at $120 for all 6 weeks.

Diverse Journeys on a Common Path: Building Community through the Labyrinth

If you’ve been with me for awhile, you know that I LOVE labyrinths! So I was thrilled to learn that The Labyrinth Society decided to host their annual gathering in Houston this November 10-12. It’s not a surprise since Houston has more than 20 labyrinths -- attendees will get to enjoy the diversity we have to offer. Labyrinth walks, dance presentations, and a special ceremony for Veteran’s Day will all be part of Diverse Journeys on a Common Path: Building Community through the Labyrinth.” Student discounts are available!

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. It’s #GishPicks #CuratedCulture to help you plan your weekend! I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
