Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting! AND – lucky you, I’ll be posting them here as my weekly VIDEO PICK when I can.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Have a great weekend, please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

In these post-Harvey days, many are still struggling to find their “new normal” and I know that I personally am still trying to get back into a routine while also trying to make up for lost time. I noticed that I haven’t taken as good care of myself as I should have so, I do what I do in times like these, and turn to my “12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily.” It’s a list I spent over ten years writing and one that I literally have to look at almost on a daily basis to remind myself to stay balanced, be healthy, have fun – and more! It’s part of my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project and I get more fired up for it every day. The list is comprised of 12 ways to ignite your life; I hope they’ll inspire you!

Trust in spirit (trust).
Take care of yourself (nourish).
Meditate each morning (meditate).
Commune with nature (commune).
Listen to your heart (listen).
Connect with love (love).
Be of service (serve).
Allow forgiveness (forgive).
Always be grateful (thank).
Explore your creativity (create).
Learn something new (learn).
Enjoy life (laugh).

Speaking of self-care, I have some ideas below for how to take time out for you: private intuitive guidance sessions with me on Mondays at Body Mind & Soul; amazing massages in West University; and a WHAT’S YOUR PURPOSE? workshop on Sunday, October 15. Self-care not only helps you but also those around you!

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Traders Village Art Car Show

Yee haw! It’s time for the annual Traders Village Art Car Show this Sunday, October 1, from 10am-4pm. It’s organized by the Houston Art Car Klub, of which yours truly is a member, so I’ll be there with my Phoenix Rising Art Car. This is the largest event outside of the Houston Art Car Parade weekend so come check us out at the market. It’s a great opportunity to meet the artists in a more intimate setting.

Umbria in Sugar Land

The City of Sugar Land is proud to host Umbria in Sugar Land,” an Italian film festival taking place through Sunday, October 1 at locations throughout Sugar Land, including the historic Sugar Land Auditorium and Lonnie Green Park. There will be both Italian and European films at historic Sugar Land Auditorium, a public screening of a film in Sugar Land Town Square, and additional cultural events and seminars.

Family Day: Special Portrait Edition

HCP is hosting a Family Day: Special Portrait Edition this Saturday, September 30 from 11am-3pm. There will be fun activities such as scavenger hunts and storytelling, designed for everyone to reflect on and imagine who we are as individuals and communities in this special edition of Family Day, post-Harvey.

Heart of Texas Hurricane Disaster Relief Auction & Fundraiser

Local Houston artists Katherine Houston and Cookie Ashton, along with gallerists Laura Rathe of Laura Rathe Fine Art and Kathy Dimmitt of Dimmitt Contemporary Art, are gathering art from across the globe to auction off this Saturday, September 30 at Laura Rathe Fine Art. 100 percent of the proceeds from the auction will benefit the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund established by Mayor Sylvester Turner and Judge Ed Emmett.

Downtown Aquarium Super Saturdays

This Saturday, September 30 is the last Super Saturday deal (buy one pass, get one free) at the Downtown Aquarium. The unique site is a six-acre entertainment that is the product of redeveloping two downtown Houston landmarks – Fire Station No. 1 and the Central Waterworks Building. There’s a dining complex and a 500,000-gallon aquatic wonderland for kids to explore.

Exit Laughing

Theatre Suburbia presents Paul Elliott's hilarious Southern comedy Exit Laughing through October 14. Described as a cross between “Steel Magnolias” and “The Golden Girls,” this fast-paced comedy brings to life a night when a ladies’ bridge club decides to have one last fling for Mary, a recently lost bridge partner, with alcohol, "borrowed" remains, and the police. Tickets are $13-$16 and can be purchased here.

Sarah Gish

I am an intuitive guide at Body Mind & Soul on Mondays and my goal is to IGNITE YOUR LIFE! through a 30- or 60-minute session in which we will delve into what makes your heart sing. I can help you with work and/or personal issues and it’s a great way to jump-start life changes. I’ve been doing this for over 5 years and can honestly say that every customer has walked away happy and armed with good information about themselves. For an appointment, please call the store at 713.993.0550 or call me at 713.492.1173 for more information about how I can help you.

Gandhari Bouligny

Gandhari Bouligny of White Rose Wellness is a gifted healer who will listen to your body to help restore balance, resilience, strength, suppleness, and ease. She achieves this using relaxing massage techniques along with energy clearing to bring deep peace and relaxation through the holistic integration of the body/mind/spirit. When we let go of mental tension and worry, our bodies naturally come back into balance and we regain peace of mind and physical vibrancy and well-being. Gandhari’s prices vary; see more about her offerings here. You can book an appointment with her by calling 281.217.2910.

What's Your Purpose Workshop

This is the class for you if you are wondering what your purpose in life is! Join Gandhari Bouligny and me on Sunday, October 15 from 2-4pm at Body Mind & Soul as we talk to you about ways to catch your dreams and uncover who you really are, using tools from astrology as well as personal intuition in this two-hour, hands-on workshop. We’ll start out dancing (!) and then each participant will learn about their special astrological characteristics and will be given their life path number (using numerology) from Gandhari. I will guide everyone with salient questions and information from Ayurvedic philosophies designed to open your mind to who you really are – physically and in your soul – and what you really want to do with your life. All of these activities will lead to writing a personal mission statement.

Each class member will walk away with a better understanding of themselves and their life vision and concrete ideas on how to become who they are truly meant to be. It’ll be a wonderful way to spend two hours, just on YOU! Click here to register.

Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
