Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

This is a new publication that is the combination of two that I’ve been doing since 2004 – GISH PICKS: A GUIDE TO CULTURAL ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES and SPIRIT PICKS: A GUIDE TO INSPIRING ACTIVITIES IN HOUSTON. I hope you’ll come along with me on this adventure of discovering all that Houston has to offer. And please reply to this email with your feedback and let me know how I’m doing. You can stay in touch with me in Facebooklandia by LIKE-ing our GISH PICKS Facebook page and sharing it with your friends and family and elsewhere on social media. Don’t want to miss any posts? Click on the drop-down LIKE button and then check “See First” under “In Your Newsfeed.” By the way, I love to ignite lives (see more about that here) and this e-newsletter/blog is just one more way for me to do that. Exploring your city and all it has to offer will definitely ignite your life!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people that know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Thank you for your continued support and here’s to many years of GISH PICKS!

As promised, this week’s VIDEO PICK is Houston-centric – it’s a song from the album “Our Roots are Strong. My friend Leah White and I are big fans of historic preservation (I helped save the lovely River Oaks Theatre from being torn down in 2007) so we got together to make this groovy album for families that rocks Houston landmarks! Leah did the whole thing, really, but I did have a hand: I helped produce it and I told her which landmarks to highlight. In the end, she sang about the Julia Ideson Building, the Vaquero Statue in Moody Park, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Johnson Space Center, The Heritage Society and Sam Houston Park, Christ Church Cathedral, The Rice Hotel, NRG Astrodome in Reliant Park, Landmark River Oaks Theatre, The Downtown Aquarium, Freedmen’s Town in Fourth Ward, and The Orange Show Monument. We even included songs about our live oak trees and Buffalo Bayou! The album was created by historic Sugar Hill Recording Studios and this video was made by Houston-based Zenfilm. Enjoy!

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Buffalo Bayou: Transforming Houston’s Waterways

The theme for the WOW talks this year is "Houston's Great!" so the speakers are plucked from many different parts of Houston to talk about what makes Houston GREAT. The final WOW talk is on Friday, October 28 with Jonathon Glus of the Houston Arts Alliance, who will talk about Houston’s lively and diverse arts scene.
