Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Tune in here each Friday from 12-12:30pm to join the convo. My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKSand our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of September 7-9, 2018
Picks for Adults the Weekend of September 7-9, 2018

Sprinkler Day

Do you have fond memories of summer sprinkler play like I do? Then this event is for your family! Head over to the Nature Discovery Center this Sunday, September 9, from 1pm-3pm for Sprinkler Day.” The Center’s front lawn, Pecan Grove, will be set up with sprinklers and kiddie pools of water and water toys (kids can bring their own if they wish.) Kids should bring or wear bathing suits, towels, sunscreen, and bug spray. Water shoes are optional if desired.

The Mousetrap

One of my favorite annual Alley Theatre traditions, the “ExxonMobil Summer Chills,” is continuing with The Mousetrap through September 16 with evening shows Wednesdays through Sundays, and matinees on Saturdays and Sundays. The longest running show in world theatre history, Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap” is a classic whodunit that recently celebrated its 66th anniversary on London’s West End – and yet still thrills audiences today. The storyline is that a group of strangers find themselves trapped in a British boarding house during a snow storm with a murderer afoot. Tickets start at $26; click here to purchase them.

Second Saturday Settlers: Clayworks

Join the staff of Jones Park each month for their “Second Saturday Settlers” programs, which are for visitors of all ages. This Saturday, September 8, from 1-3pm, join staff and volunteers at the Redbud Hill Homestead for Second Saturday Settlers: Clayworks to learn how to mix clay, pine straw, and water to make "chinking" which is used to fill the cracks and crevices between the logs of their historic 1830s cabin and outbuildings. The park is a premier 312-acre Harris County Precinct 4 nature preserve open daily to visitors free of charge – most of their programs are free, including this one.

This Sunday, September 9, from 4-7pm, enjoy Reunite/Reunir,” a program of two one-hour shows at 4pm and 6pm featuring seventeen Houston arts groups and performers at the MATCH as well as an intermission from 5-6pm for eating and mingling. The Alley Theatre, Colombian Folkloric Ballet, Da Camera, Hope Stone Dance, Houston Ballet, Houston Boychoir, Houston Grand Opera, Kam Franklin, Karen Stokes Dance, Mercury, METdance, Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company, NobleMotion Dance, Outspoken Bean, Stages Repertory Theatre, Two Star Symphony, and WindSync are all donating performances to help the Texas Civil Rights Project, which is reuniting families at the border. For more information and tickets (a $50 donation per show), click here.

Saturdays in the Park

Every Saturday (weather permitting), you can enjoy Saturdays in the Park and watch the evolution of Smither Park as this beautiful and creative green space is transformed by local artists with reused and repurposed materials. It’s old-fashioned fun: bring a picnic lunch and hang out under the pavilion, bring instruments and start a drum circle, bring art supplies for art-making, create a spontaneous performance in the unique amphitheater, or just enjoy relaxing on the swings. You can tour all the whimsical mosaics that have been completed – see if you can find the mosaic depicting my Phoenix Rising Art Car!

Crimson Vagabond Road Show

Laura Hurter, aka The Crimson Vagabond,” has organized a super fun weekend – the Crimson Vagabond Road Show – which features a wild band of performers. Musicians, dancers, and artists are coming together to create a show unlike any other, one that is curated to inspire with live music, fusion, folk and belly dance performances, workshops, vendors, a drum jam, an after party, and so much more. It all takes place at the MATCH this Friday, September 7 through Sunday, September 9.

GUIDANCE SESSIONS (Mondays) and LABYRINTH WALKS (Second Saturdays)

I offer intuitive guidance sessions every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 10am-5:30pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. Let’s connect if you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both). I use my intuitive skills and my years of experience with clients to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams, and your desires – and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. Finding your personal mission will exponentially increase your ability to succeed in life while also attracting an abundance of joy. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at ‪713.993.0550 to book an appointment. PLEASE NOTE: I ALSO DO THESE BY PHONE. CALL ME AT 713.492.1173 FOR THIS SERVICE.

If you’re looking for a way to increase the peace in your life, please join me for Second Saturday Labyrinth Walks at the beautiful Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston at 500 Fannin Street. My next walk will be this Saturday, September 8, 9am-11am. Free parking is available in the Christ Church Cathedral garage at 559 San Jacinto Street; bring your ticket in to get it validated. New people will tour the center and we’ll all walk the labyrinth and make art. I am a trained labyrinth facilitator and love sharing what I know with others. Register for the walk here or at the door. You’ll leave with something you’ve made, a list of Houston area labyrinths, and a handout on the art of walking labyrinths. If you’d like to read more about my work and Houston labyrinths, click here.

Are you wondering what you should be doing with your life? We can help you! Gandhari Bouligny and I will be presenting What’s Your Purpose? at Body Mind & Soul on Sunday, October 7 from 2-4pm. It’s a great way to re-focus your life in only 2 hours! Plus it’s fun – we dance, you create, and you’ll get your astrological information. You will walk out with a personal mission statement and a much better understanding of who you are. For more details and to register, click here.
