Welcome to the first edition of a brand-new evolution in GISH PICKS! I have been publishing two e-newsletter/blogs focused on cultural activities and interesting news in Houston – GISH PICKS: A GUIDE TO CULTURAL ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES for families since 2004, and SPIRIT PICKS: A GUIDE TO INSPIRING ACTIVITIES IN HOUSTON for adults since 2013. Over the past 12 years, I’ve highlighted thousands of organizations and written about thousands of events – shining a light on Houston gems, Houston fun, and Houston places. I am very proud of my reputation as a culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston! My goal with these publications has been to find those things that make Houston cool – things that aren’t “cheesy” or commonplace – and also to highlight what makes Houston unique and what makes it great. And because I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and PICK only three to recommend, I have made it easy for you, my loyal readers, to figure out what to do when Friday hits.

I’m out there a lot, attending many cultural events and meeting many GISH PICKS and SPIRIT PICKS readers. It’s been so fun sharing the best in Houston with all of you! As I’ve talked to you, the feedback I’ve gotten is that readers want PICKS for both adults and kids. Sometimes the events that I promote are multi-generational so the new and improved GISH PICKS will cover it all. Each week I’ll be sending you GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS. It’ll still have the great kinds of PICKS that you found in my two separate publications but it will be organized a little bit differently; there will be three PICKS for kids and three PICKS for adults, making it easy for you to pick and choose from all six (and you’ll be able to choose to just look at kid or adult PICKS if you wish). I’ll still have a VIDEO PICK – which will now be either short flicks I make featuring different elements of Houston or videos by others of interesting Houston things. And I’ll continue including “OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST,” the catch-all location for my PICKS on things like classes for adults and kids, timely news, and volunteer opportunities. And…there are some surprises down the road! Watch my video above for all the scoop on the new GISH PICKS.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page (click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button) and please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way.

Join me as we continue this adventure of enjoying #GishPicks #CuratedCulture! And please tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. And…don’t forget to tell the organizations that I sent you. They love to know who is talking about them.

Thank you for your continued support and here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

Hands-On Houston

This Saturday, September 3 from 11am-3pm, kids can enjoy making glass lens paperweights in this fun indoor activity at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft! Afterwards, enjoy the final day of their summer show, “Charlotte Potter: Glass Armory,” and a gallery talk with the artist at 3:30pm.

Shear Madness

It’s full-on audience participation this weekend through September 18 with the production of “Shear Madness” at Stages Repertory Theatre. You get to play “Shearlock Holmes,” figuring out who murdered a renowned pianist living above Houston’s hottest hair salon. Good luck with the case!

NeverEnding Story

The classic 1984 film “The NeverEnding Story” will be shown in select Houston theaters this Sunday, September 4 and next Wednesday, September 7. Sign up for the Fathom Events email list and be in the know about all their arts, comedy, and other film screenings.

Houston Dash

Have you heard of the Houston Dash, Houston’s professional women’s soccer team? Come watch their game this Saturday, September 3 at 7:30pm at the beautiful BBVA Compass Stadium.

Bollywood Blast

Samskriti is once again presenting their gorgeous spectacle of Indian dance, Bollywood Blast, this Sunday, September 4. It’s a school night but bring the kids at least for a little bit and you’ll be glad you did!

The Rolling Stones

The Houston Symphony is rocking it out this weekend with music by the Rolling Stones this Friday, September 2 at 8pm and music by Queen this Saturday, September 3 at 7:30pm. Bring your best British accent and prepare to be blown away!

Hope Stone

Hope Stone is offering exciting classes for adults and kids this year – click here for the children’s classes and here for the adult ones. Special kid classes are INTERACT (teens pairing up with the elderly community), “Parent & Me with Seniors” classes for parents and toddlers at a senior center, and acting classes for teens and pre-teens.

in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. It’s #GishPicks #CuratedCulture to help you plan your weekend! I’ll also include one VIDEO PICK that will be either something I make or films by other Houston filmmakers. And, be sure to check out our “Other Items of Interest” section – we’ll have classes, news, volunteer opportunities, and more there. I love to ignite lives (see more about that here) and this publication is just one more way for me to do that. Exploring our city and all it has to offer will indeed IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
