Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Ok ya’ll - time to get serious about saving money! I’ve been telling you about how I am working with the Houston Museum of Natural Science and offering special membership discounts to GISH PICKS readers - this is your last week to git on it as this offer expires this Saturday, August 31! To cash in, click here and enter promo code SG19 to get started.

Houston is turning 183 this Friday, August 30 and the Heritage Society is celebrating with a special event this Saturday, August 31 - check out my KID PICKS below for more info. This week’s VIDEO PICK focuses on the Heritage Society - “Houston’s Heritage Ambassadors” - and all that they do. They are located across the street from Sam Houston Park, Houston’s oldest park (established 1899), and are the custodians of ten historic buildings dating from 1823 to 1905. Founded in 1954 by public-spirited Houstonians to rescue the 1847 Kellum-Noble House from demolition, there is also a Museum Gallery which has exhibition spaces for more than 23,000 artifacts that document life in Houston from the early 1800s to the mid-1900s. Houston was founded in 1836 by brothers John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman Allen with funding from Augustus’ wife, Charlotte - who is known as the “Mother of Houston.” It was named after Sam Houston, the first and third president of the Republic of Texas. Today it is the most diverse city in the country, with over 160 languages spoken! Want to know more about Houston? Take a tour with a docent at the Heritage Society or take a self-guided cell phone tour by clicking here.

Monday is Labor Day - the celebration of hard work in which we hardly work! I hope you’ll enjoy some down time on the (really, truly) final day of summer. This holiday was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century during the Industrial Revolution and became a federal holiday in 1894 (see more about its history here). Speaking of labor, if you need help finding a job, I recently learned about the Select Center for Economic Opportunity, an organization which offers a fantastic “Job Search 101” program. They’ll help you write a resume, create your online profiles, learn about technology, and much more.

A quick note about my ADULT PICKS this week - each one is music! I try to diversify my choices - between visual art, theatre, dance, literary, general culture, music, and film - and I literally have index cards so I’ll do this. But I just couldn’t help myself - there is too much cool music happening. I’ll be better next week, I promise!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Stay tuned here for more details! My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for FAMILY PICKS and our Facebook page for ADULT PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me: I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Guests will enjoy complimentary food, drinks, and a large birthday cake and will get to meet special guests the Allen brothers (founders of Houston) and “Mother of Houston” Charlotte Allen. There will be free tours of the historic homes and the museum at The Heritage Society, and Mister McKinney’s open-air Houston History Bus will be offering free educational bus tours of historic downtown Houston spanning 183 years of our city’s past.

National Battle of the Bands

This Sunday, September 1 at 6pm, enjoy the first annual Houston-based “National Battle of the Bands” event, which is a kick-off to the fall marching band season by showcasing new performances of the country’s top marching bands of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s). Bands scheduled to appear are TSU, Prairie View, North Carolina Central, Talladega College, Southern, Miles College, and Tennessee State. Tickets are $20/each and can be purchased here.

Prelude Music Foundation

Prelude Music Foundation is passionate about bringing music to ALL children through a variety of year-round programs that make it fun and accessible. They wanted to extend that inspiration to the general public so they brought professional Houston musicians together for a 45-minute family engagement concert, “My First Orchestral Concert,” this Saturday, August 31 at 10am. Families and children will get to experience the joy of music-making and are encouraged to sing along, dance, and express themselves!

Insomnia Gallery

Houston Mennonite Church is a welcoming spiritual home in Houston that celebrates peace in all ways, including music. This Sunday, September 1 at 6pm, they are hosting the Free Radicals and the Bob Henschen Quartet in a “Jazz for Peace” concert. There will be a potluck meal, silent auction, and performance to help Free Radicals pay fair wages to the many guest artists on their upcoming 8th album. The silent auction will include dozens of peace posters from the personal collection of longtime Houston peace and justice activist Lee Loe. A $10 donation is suggested.

Medicine for the People Spiritual Gathering

If you’re looking for community out in the country (Dripping Springs to be exact!), come to the next Medicine for the People Spiritual Gathering, taking place Thursday, September 19 through Sunday, September 22 at 3550 Pursley Road. The event is the center for Texas’ grassroots movement for love, compassion, and healing in ourselves and our community and it’s a time to come together and to camp together in nature to increase the peace. Medicine for the People is a leave no trace, family-friendly, drug-free event that offers many opportunities for exploration such as yoga, Ecstatic Dance, healing workshops and sound healings, meditations, drum circles, and more. There will be an herbal tea lounge and a community kitchen plus kids’ activities and much more. Quiet time and self-healing is also encouraged throughout your time there.

The goal is for you to discover what your personal medicine is. Is it dancing, yoga, music, art, flow, nature, meditation, children playing, or just being present? If you are not sure what your personal medicine is yet, come find your personal mantra as you reconnect to your most authentic self - LOVE.

Tickets start at $59 and include all activities, playshops, dances, performances, ceremonies, campground amenities, and land fees.
