THOUGHTS FOR THIS WEEK
Summer is winding down, my friends, so get ready! It’s time for that last blast of fun in the city before the routine starts up again. Even if you don’t have kiddos, you know the rhythm of the season is changing. So go to the beach, head to Miller Outdoor Theatre, or get some swimming in before it’s over. Here’s a great way for families to wind the summer down (or kick the fall up): I have some Children’s Museum of Houston passes! To win the tickets, donate at least $25 to my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project and I’ll be happy to send you a pass good for up to four people through December 31, 2017. All funds raised go towards creating art for the project, doing research, and disseminating information about ways to IGNITE YOUR LIFE.
It’s been a crazy summer in our country – the heat is high and so are emotions. The topics with which we are grappling are difficult and complex – war, Confederate statues, neo-Nazis, healthcare. Unrest abounds and we are stirred up by so much. I recommend in this time of turmoil that you practice BREATHING and staying calm. Don’t spend all your time focused on news/Facebook/politics. Have dinner with a friend! See a funny movie! Get outside! Wasn’t that eclipse a great excuse for heading outdoors?! For the first time in a long time, so many were focused on a beautiful natural event (NASA scientists were calling it “spiritual”!) and not on what divides us. As for the statues, our very own Mayor Turner has a reasonable approach (see today’s VIDEO PICK) and the Southern Poverty Law Center has a thorough study on the issue which you can see here. I am for taking the statues down – not to destroy them but to find a better place to display them such as a museum. Not all of you will agree with me (some of my friends don’t) but I spent time in Charlottesville last week after the awful rally (see my note about that here) and I believe that since these monuments attract Nazis and white supremacists and cause pain to so many in our country – especially the black community – then it’s time for them to go.
Michael Franti is coming to town on Thursday – he is one of my all-time favorite, super positive, full-of-love rockers! See more about his show in the PICK below. And in the meantime, kick off your day with his song “Once a Day” and then git on out there and HUG SOMEBODY!
Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!
