Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Mental health is on my mind today, perhaps because writer Elizabeth Gilbert (author of Eat Pray Love) recently got very honest in a post about her battle with depression and anxiety. Or because I was reading about Houston-reared Lizzo, a body positive, self-loving rapper who is lighting up the stage with her musical musings. We all have challenges – some more than others – so if you are needing support, I wanted to make sure you knew about some upcoming events. NAMI Greater Houston (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is hosting several summer “NAMI Family & Friends Seminars,” a 4-hour session that informs and supports family members, partners, friends, and significant others who have loved ones with a mental health condition. And the Jung Center is presenting their annual weekend conference with the topic “Love and the Boundaries of the Imagination starting this Friday, August 2 and running through Sunday, August 4. They will use lecture, small- and large-group work, and creative activities to explore how love is fundamental to everything we do and all that we imagine ourselves to be. It is, after all, LOVE that heals everything.

This week’s VIDEO PICK is all about love – self-love, healing love, love for others, and a love for honesty. It’s the video of the Houston edition of the “This is My Brave” show that I participated in this past April. I’ve linked it so it will start at my performance so please rewind it if you’d like to see the whole show. It was a moving and thought-provoking experience and I am very proud to have been asked to be a part of this amazing movement. This is My Brave is a nonprofit whose goal is to bring stories of mental illness and addiction out of the shadows and into the spotlight through pop-up storytelling events such as the one in Houston.

Summer is winding down…but August is still on the calendar, my friends! If you’re looking for summer day camps for these last days before school starts – doncha worry! You can search my HUGE database of over 200 camps at and peruse my final CAMP BLAST for the summer, which will be posted on the GISH PICKS page this Friday, August 2. There are camps for every child and every interest, including arts, sports, cooking, international cultures, academics, fitness, science, and much more. Check it out – you’ll LOVE all the info I have for you!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Stay tuned here for more details! My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for FAMILY PICKS and our Facebook page for ADULT PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me: I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of August 2-4, 2019
Picks for Adults the Weekend of August 2-4, 2019

Houston Museum of Natural Science

HMNS is a great place to hit when the heat is high: films on their screens (the Planetarium and the Wortham Giant Screen Theatre) this weekend include “Apollo 11: First Steps Edition” and “Tales of a Time Traveler.” And take note: the Houston Museum of Natural Science is offering up to $50 off on memberships with a special promo code from me! Click here and type in the code “SG19” and follow the links. It’s easy and starts immediately so you can enjoy all the Museum’s exhibits now. Act quickly as this offer goes extinct on August 31.

University of Houston

It’s August and time for the annual free “Houston Shakespeare Festival,” which this year is taking place August 2-11 and is featuring alternating presentations of “Julius Caesar” and “As you Like It” at Miller Outdoor Theatre (see the full schedule here). The Festival debuted in 1975 under the direction of my late friend Dr. Sidney Berger (then director of the School of Theatre at the University of Houston) in collaboration with UH theatre professor Cecil Pickett as well as the Miller Outdoor Theatre.

Brazos Bookstore

World-famous Waldo is all over Houston, thanks to “Find Waldo Local 2019,” hosted by Brazos Bookstore through July 30. Children can get their “Find Waldo Passports” at the bookstore, and then take it to at least 10 participating local businesses to get it stamped (see full list here). The “Find Waldo Local Finale Party” is this Saturday, August 3 at 3pm. They’ll have one last scavenger hunt and give prizes from all of their Find Waldo Local partners.

Boutique Properties

Boutique Properties has put together a fun “Pretty & Pink: All Pink Art Pop-Up Showthis Saturday, August 2 from 5-8pm at the Cottonmouth Club at 108 Main Street. Happy hour cocktails will be served until 7 and all of the art (all pink!) is for sale. They’ll have a pink and gold photo booth and there’s no entry fee. Boutique Properties is a human-focused real estate firm with a passion for highlighting Houston.

Contemporary Arts Museum Houston

CAMH offers a free “Drop-In Experience” every Saturday from 1-4pm, which feature guided in-gallery discussions and pop-up activities that provide creative opportunities to experience the exhibitions on view in a unique and meaningful way. Each program is led by a group of artists and historians who assist with contextualizing CAMH’s dynamic exhibitions for diverse audiences. This Saturday, August 3, the theme is “Continuous Line Drawing” -- using masking tape, visitors will  transform the museum space into a continuous line drawing inspired by the mechanics of Steven Evan’s neon light sculptures, currently on view in his “If I can’t dance, it’s not my revolution!” exhibition.

Public Poetry

Poetry comes alive the first Saturday of each month at 2pm during the “Public Poetry Summer Series 2019,” which features readings performed by a creative mix of artists at the Bracewell Neighborhood Library. Audience members are encouraged to join in and read a piece by their favorite poet, then stop by a local eatery for “After-Words” to mix and mingle with poets, friends, and others. The next program is this Saturday, August 3 and “After-Words” will take place at Pho Hai Van. This series is presented in partnership with the Houston Public Library.
