Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

This week’s VIDEO PICK is a short film about Miller Outdoor Theatre – it’s a lovely Houston spot for culture that is ALWAYS free. It’s outdoors but you can get free day-of tickets for the covered, air-conditioned seats – and it’s always fun to hang out on the hill after dark! I’ve been going to Miller since I was 5 years old and appreciate the variety of shows presented there. Rolling down the famous “hippie hill” was always part of our visits there when I was younger – it was created with dirt from Fannin Street excavations to accommodate the growing Texas Medical Center in 1948. If you’d like to know more about the history of the theatre, click here – it’s fascinating and is a testament to the city of Houston’s early and visionary support for the arts. For those who are curiouser and curiouser, Miller Outdoor Theatre was named after mining engineer and cotton broker Jesse Wright Miller and his sister Alma Womack. Be sure to stop by to see the Theatre Under the Stars’ (TUTS) production of Seussical the Musical,” onstage through this Sunday, July 21.

This Saturday, July 20, is the 50th anniversary of the first crewed moon landing and Houston is celebrating bigtime. I’ve got a fun KID PICK below that’s taking place at The Health Museum and there are many other happenings. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is opening their show “Shooting the Moon: Photographs from the Museum’s Collection 50 Years after Apollo 11” and the Houston Astros will wear a special commemorative cap at “Apollo 11 Night” at next Monday’s game (July 22). Discovery Green is celebrating on Saturday from 6-10pm in their “A Giant Leap” party, the Children’s Museum of Houston is hosting a Star Wars meet-and-greet on Saturday from 10am-4pm, and of course Space Center Houston has many moon-alicious events planned, which includes tours of their newly-restored Apollo Mission Control Center.

If you’re still looking for summer day camps in Houston – doncha worry! You can peruse my latest round up of fave CAMP PICKS here, and search my HUGE database of over 200 camps at There are camps for every child and every interest, including arts, sports, cooking, international cultures, academics, fitness, science, and much more. Check it out – you’ll LOVE all the info I have for you!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Stay tuned here for more details! My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for FAMILY PICKS and our Facebook page for ADULT PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me: I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of July 19-21, 2019
Picks for Adults the Weekend of July 19-21, 2019

Vishva Hindu Pasrishad of America (Houston Chapter)

The Houston chapter of VHPA is hosting a special “Puppet & Dance Musical Show - Malvika-Agnimitramthis Friday, July 19 at 7pm. Malavi-Agnimitram is a Broadway style, very lively (perfect for kids!) puppet show with lyrics in Hindi and commentary in English. There’s a suggested donation of $10 and a light dinner will be served prior to the show. All proceeds will go to Support a Child which helps Indian children in need.

Mildred's Umbrella

Mildred’s Umbrella always stages their “Museum of Dysfunction” series in the summer and this year it’s taking place July 18-20 and July 25-27. The show will be a “best of” collection of dysfunctional (and weird!) short plays from the last ten years of festivals (the full schedule of plays and artists is here). If you’ve never been, it’s a blast…and yes, totally weird, which is good! All tickets are now pay-what-you-can.

Houston World Series of Dog Shows

It’s time for the annual “Houston World Series of Dog Shows” which is in town until this Sunday, July 21. There will be more than 30 independent breed specialty competitions, as well as the Houston Hound, Working Dog, and All-Terrier shows and a chance to chat with owners/handlers. Check the schedule here to see what your kiddos would like best!  Children 12 and under are free and adult tickets are $10 and $15.

1940 Air Terminal Museum

This Saturday, July 20, from 10am-3pm, the 1940 Air Terminal Museum is hosting a huge “Wings & Wheels Summer Block Party.” There will be fun all day long: activities for kids (including a reading of the children’s book Alis the Aviator) plus guided tours of the museum and a special air show. And my buddy Gonzo 247 will unveil his 3-D art installation on their 1969 Hawker Jet. Tickets are $7/adults and $3/children 2-12 years old.

The Health Museum

The Smithsonian film “The Day We Walked on the Moon” is being shown at the Health Museum this weekend – Saturday, July 20 at 10am and Sunday, July 21 at 2pm – as part of their celebration of the moon landing. The film focuses on the 3 brave astronauts, Michael Collins, Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin, and their amazing mission. Tickets are $10/adults; $8/kids 3-12 and seniors (65+). More info about that and other Museum events is here.

Michele Brangwen Dance Ensemble

The “Dancing the Blue Hour” is a new dance and music performance work that explores what happens when people come together to experience the blue hour, that slowed down time just before sunrise at the end of the night, when the sky is brilliant blue. You’ll journey to a field in the French countryside, where crickets and night birds will transport you from the frenetic daytime world to the softness of a summer night. Shows are Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20 at 8pm both nights, and tickets start at the $5 “Art For All” price.

I offer intuitive "Life Path Sessions" most Mondays at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 11am-5pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. I also help people who are struggling with ANY kind of issue they may encounter along life’s path: grief, relationship problems, work troubles, etc. My goal is to help people listen to their heart and to connect with sources of inspiration or guidance or support. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at713.993.0550 to book an appointment. The Healing Space Houston

How many women look forward to going to the doctor? When was the last time you really sat down and talked to your doctor? Would you like for the time spent at the doctor’s office to be face to face time with your doc, not time wasted while you wait? Monica Roberson, M.D. is my doctor and the founder of The Healing Space, a boutique integrative medicine practice in which she seeks to find the roots of ailments, not to mask their symptoms temporarily. From the moment you walk in the door, you’ll know you’re experiencing something new: the spa-like environment lets you focus on finding balance and wellness and their treatments are geared towards preventing disease before it starts. Dr. Roberson takes the time to understand your family life, nutrition goals, and more. Proven, natural therapies are always considered first with standard Western care available when needed.

Dr. Roberson’s patient base is extensive and she is ready to help women of all ages. She specializes in helping teenagers, natural living moms, perimenopausal and menopausal women and she also guides those needing help using bioidentical hormones. Dr. Roberson also does integrative wellness consultations for pre-baby, post-baby, restorative self-care, healthy weight loss, and balancing hormones.

Dr. Roberson is board-certified by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and has a B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology and a Doctor of Medicine degree. She completed a two-year Fellowship with the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine under the direction of Dr. Andrew Weil (the world’s leading proponent of integrative medicine). At The Healing Space, you can get consultations, wellness exams including a PAP, and management for medical problems as necessary.

The Healing Space is conveniently located in central Houston at 1728 Bissonnet. For appointments and more information, please call 713.520.6800. (Headshot by dabfoto.)
