Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting! AND – lucky you, I’ll be posting them here as my weekly VIDEO PICK when I can.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Have a great weekend, please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

The Guide to Good Divorce

“Divorce is rarely easy, yet navigating those rough waters can be easier with sufficient knowledge, preparation, and support,” explains Trey Yates, a Houston based, board-certified family law attorney. He’s the founder of The Guide to Good Divorce, a nonprofit that presents seminars that are designed to help women at all stages of the divorce process. Uniquely qualified experts on the law of divorce in Texas, divorce financial planning, life skills, and physical and spiritual wellness will provide attendees with vital information to help them create a plan of action.

The Guide to Good Divorce also provides opportunities for women facing divorce to network and connect with each other by building new communities for support. Says Trey, “I have witnessed many women draw strength, comfort, and encouragement from our seminars and each other as they transition out of a marriage and into a new phase of their lives.” Yates has practiced family law in the greater Houston Metropolitan Area since 1986.

The next seminar is Saturday, July 29 from 8:30am-2pm at Unity of Houston at 2929 Unity Drive; please register for that here (sign up now, spots fill up fast!). The fee is $69 and includes a light brunch starting at 8:30am; the session starts promptly at 9am. If you can’t make the July seminar, the next two will be on Saturday, September 30 at the Houstonian, 111 N. Post Oak Lane, and Saturday, November 11 in Sugar Land.

Come see me at The Path of Tea this Sunday, July 16, 2-6pm for a beautiful afternoon of bonding over tea and bracelets and cake! I'll be selling my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project bracelets and will be talking about what's new with it – including workshops, this summer's road trip (inspired by HAMILTON!), and more. I created IGNITE YOUR LIFE! in honor of my brother, Geoffrey Gish, who died of alcoholism in 2004. His birthday was 7/17/61 so having this event a day before his birthday is meaningful.

The bracelets have words that are from "The 12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily!" which you can see here. They are handmade by me and are imbued with special energy as I pray over them and think about how they will inspire the wearer. They are $25/each. If you can't make it but would like to purchase the bracelets, please check them out at the Unity of Houston bookstore or Lucia's Garden. Or you get one as a perk with a $100 donation to my fundraiser (along with a host of other goodies including artwork, a ride in my Phoenix Rising Art Car, acting and art lessons, and much more!)

And -- there will be cake! The Path of Tea is celebrating their 11th anniversary all day long with tea and complimentary cake. YUM.

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. It’s #GishPicks #CuratedCulture to help you plan your weekend! In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
