Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

You might not think about our METRO bus system much but they are celebrating 40 years this year and I wanted to acknowledge that with this week’s VIDEO PICK. My boys always have bus passes (used regularly until they got their licenses!) and I have many friends and family members who, in addition to riding the bus, use METROrail and METROLift. I enjoyed riding the rail last week to the Miller Outdoor Theatre 4th of July celebration – it was much easier than fighting traffic and parking! The Metro app is handy and you can also access ride info from many GPS systems on your phone. To get a METRO Q® Fare Card or Day Pass, click here -- and great news about those cards: METRO is bringing back their “Summer of Fun” program, where students K-12 with a Student METRO Q® Fare Card can ride free through August 31. All the details are here. Also in this week’s edition I’m touting another city service: check out my KID PICKS for more about all the FREE happenings at Houston Public Library branches throughout the city. You will be AMAZED.

If you’re still looking for summer day camps in Houston – doncha worry! You can peruse my latest round up of fave CAMP PICKS here, and search my HUGE database of over 200 camps at There are camps for every child and every interest, including arts, sports, cooking, international cultures, academics, fitness, science, and much more. Check it out – you’ll LOVE all the info I have for you!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Stay tuned here for more details! My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for FAMILY PICKS and our Facebook page for ADULT PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me: I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of July 5-7, 2019
Picks for Adults the Weekend of July 12-14, 2019

Houston Public Library

It’s hot and you need a cool place to hang with the kids: check out all the activities at Houston Public Library branches all over the greater Houston area! There is something to do For kid info, start here. You can then peruse their calendar for events, storytimes, and playgroups. Have fun!

Inprint is proud to serve as a host for the “First Friday Poetry Reading Series,” the oldest poetry series in Houston. It’s been held monthly on the first Friday of each month since 1975 and has been continuously coordinated and curated by Robert Clark. Each reading begins with a featured poet, followed by an open mic. This Friday, July 12 at 8:30pm, “First Friday” celebrates its 44th Anniversary with Cindy Huyser; details are here.

Typhoon Texas

Do you have your Typhoon Texas Houston Seasons Passes yet?! We do and it’s been a BLAST (pictured are my younger son and his cousin, it’s great for ALL ages!). Enjoy a cabana, live music, nighttime movies, and other summer fun (see the full schedule here) plus smokin’ BBQ and other yummy food -- and of course: THE WATER! Day Passes start at $20 (varies by date) and Season Passes start at $69.

Music Box Theater

I love the creativity of the folks at the Music Box Theater! They are stepping back to groovier times (the 1960s and 1970s to be specific) and belting out tunes in their summer  show, “Feelin’ Groovy 5,” onstage through August 31. As per usual for the troupe, the songs will be alternated with silly comedy sketches – and you’ll get to hear classics like “Woman in Love” by Barbra Streisand and “Black Dog” by Led Zeppelin. Tickets start at $31.

Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo knows you want a break from the heat so they created “Evening Chill: Lions, Tigers, and Bears” which is this Friday, July 12 and Saturday, July 13 from 5-8pm. This special evening highlights their lions, tigers, and bears and guests can enjoy family activities such as making animal masks, learning about recycling activity, enjoying an on-site airbrush artist, giant lawn games, and more! All activities are included in Zoo admission and are free for Zoo Members.

Sawyer Yards

On the second Saturday of each month (so this Saturday, July 13), the artists of The Silos, Silver Street, Winter Street, Sabine Street, and Summer Street Studios open their studios to the public from 12-5pm and Spring Street Studios open from 12-7pm. You can spend the afternoon wandering through six repurposed warehouses and discover an extensive selection of painting, sculpture, jewelry, photography, clothing, textiles, printmaking, mixed media and more – all for free!

LIFE PATH SESSIONS (Mondays) and LABYRINTH WALKS (Second Saturdays)

I offer intuitive "Life Path Sessions" every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 11:00am-5:00pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. If you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both), I will serve as your Life Path Guide. One session is all you need to get ignited! I use my intuitive skills and my many years of reading people to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams and desires, and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. I also help people who are struggling with ANY kind of issue they may encounter along life’s path: grief, relationship problems, work troubles, etc. My goal is to help people listen to their heart and to connect with sources of inspiration or guidance or support. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at713.993.0550 to book an appointment. I also do Life Path Sessions by telephone – we can connect from anywhere, anytime! Call me at 713.492.1173 for more information about that service. Please note that the fee for sessions by phone is the same.

Join me this Saturday, July 13, from 10am-noon for my next monthly Second Saturday Labyrinth Walk at the beautiful Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston. We’ll tour the center, walk the labyrinth, and make art. I am a trained labyrinth facilitator and love sharing what I know with others! Register for the walk here or at the door. You’ll leave with your art, a list of Houston area labyrinths, and a handout on walking labyrinths as well as a sense of well-being and peace. Meditation does that to you!

J&P Summer Documentary Nights

The June edition of Gish at the Movies focused on the Christ Church Cathedral’s "J&P Summer Documentary Nights" -- a curated film series by the church’s Justice and Peace Council on select Wednesday nights each summer month. This month, on Wednesday, July 17, they are screening “Who Cares About Kelsey?,” a film about an innovative school program helps troubled students with behavioral and academic issues. And on Wednesday, August 21, they are screening “Newtown,” the story of the horrific mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut that changed history and revolutionized discussions on gun control.

The screenings are free and a delicious dinner is provided; there will be a short discussion afterwards. They take place from 6-8pm in the Cathedral's Reynolds Hall. Park across the street at 559 San Jacinto in the garage and bring in your ticket to get it validated for free parking.

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend.
