Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays at noon here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

The Fourth of July is coming up so what’s happening in and around H-town to celebrate the 241st year of our country? Plenty! On July 1, there’s the Katy Freedom Celebration. From July 1-3, CityCentre is celebrating with their Independence Day Fireworks Spectacular. On July 3, there’s the 4th of July in the Woodlands.” And on July 4, there are several annual celebrations: the Star-Spangled Salute with the Houston Symphony at Miller Outdoor Theatre; the City of Houston’s CITGO Freedom Over Texas; and the Fourth of July at Bayou Bend. And for the kiddos – the Children’s Museum of Houston always hosts their “Kidpendence Day” fun.

Surrounding cities are also saluting the red, white, and blue – there are celebrations in Deer Park, in Friendswood, in Kemah, in Kingwood, in Missouri City, in Pasadena, in Rosenberg, in Tomball, and in Webster.

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and please go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Visit Houston

If you can’t go anywhere this summer, do not despair! There’s so much to do right here. Hit the outdoors with Get Out Here Houston or the indoors with the Houston Museum District (check out their list of freebies here). A fun way to see sites at a discount within a short time frame is the Houston CityPASS. And for a full range of ideas, click here for Visit Houston and here for Artshound.

Support dance with a cause! This Friday, June 30 and Saturday, July 1 at 8pm, REACH is holding two benefit dance performances featuring five world premieres, all by current dancers of Houston Ballet. REACH is a platform for dancers and choreographers to challenge their creative limits and to give back to the community; these performances are raising funds for an arts education program called X3.

The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe

“The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe” closes out this weekend on Saturday, July 1 at the beautiful new A.D. Players theatre. The story follows four siblings who discover a magical wardrobe that leads them to the mystical land of Narnia, where they encounter characters such as Aslan the Lion and the evil White Witch. The remaining shows are at 10:30am daily and tickets start at $15.

Moody Center for the Arts

The Moody Center for the Arts is a brand-new multi-disciplinary arts space on the Rice University campus that is dedicated to being an experimental platform for creating and presenting works of all kinds from around the world (see this week’s VIDEO PICK for a virtual tour). The exhibition spaces and café at the Moody is open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10am to 5pm and admission is always free. The Lion King

The Lion King stage production is spectacular – strutting giraffes, swooping birds, leaping gazelles – not to mention the entire Serengeti full of animals and the one and only Lion King! The amazing Tony Award®-winning Julie Taymor directed it and it’s got stunning visuals, choreography, costumes, and more – with music by Tony Award®-winning artists Elton John and Tim Rice. The Lion King is onstage through July 23 and tickets start at $40.

Three Days of Rain

Theatre Suburbia presents Three Days of Rain,” which closes out this weekend with shows on Friday, June 30 and Saturday, July 1. It’s a bittersweet family story that revolves around an unresolved will and a bland journal that are symbols of the loveless marriage between Walker and Nan’s parents. As the family struggles to resolve things, a brittle reunion reveals that there is much more at stake than who will receive the house.

Art of Sound

My son’s longtime violin teacher, Tim Browning, is now offering lessons in your home through his music school, the Art of Sound. He’s very engaging with kids and will work with you or your children starting at any level on a variety of instruments (violin, viola, piano) and he can also teach voice or music theory lessons. Children of all ages show academic improvement when they study music and music has been shown to stave off neurological difficulties and aging issues in adults. Get started today by contacting Tim via phone at 832.452.7970 or email at The monthly tuition is $150 for weekly half hour lessons and $250 for weekly hour lessons. Cash/check/credit/Apple & Android Pay are accepted.

Sunday Drum Jam

I love drum circles and am so grateful that Houston has three really good – and really different – ones. If you’ve never been to a drum circle, I recommend trying them out. You can bring your own hand drums or they’ll probably have some you can borrow (ask before using). I find drumming relaxing and connecting. You can kick-start your week with Kim Comer (pictured), a passionate drummer and lover of life who hosts the Sunday Drum Jam on the second Sunday of every month from 2:30-5pm at Levy Park. On Wednesday nights, head over to the Last Concert Café for their late-night (midnight start time!) circle called the Wednesday Night Drum Circle. And on the first Saturday of the month, join Gregg Powell and friends for the Imani Vida Drum Circle (“faith life”), which meets at the Resurrection MCC church from 2-4pm. Each of these circles is different and are all part of the rich diversity that makes Houston great.
