Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Bicycles are on my mind this week because we are (somewhat surprisingly) a city that’s gaga for bicycles and I’m seeing more out on there on the road. There are several groups and plans happening and I wanted to be sure YOU knew about them! Houston’s City Council recently adopted a Bike Plan,” which has the goal of making Houston a safer, more accessible, “Gold Level Bike-Friendly City” (awarded by the League of American Bicyclists) by 2027; you can read all about the plan hereBikeHouston is working with the city on the plan – the goal of BikeHouston is to advocate for bikers to make roads safer in all ways. Critical Mass Houston is another local bicycle organization – they host a monthly nighttime ride (the next one is this Friday, 6/28 – details are here) and their website has a terrific calendar of weekly bicycle events (here). And finally – you should know about the Houston BCycle program! It’s a bike rental program in which you can use bikes from one of the 92 stations throughout central Houston – if you want to ride around downtown but don’t want to strap your bicycle on your car, rent one instead. It’s a super fun way to cruise around without a lot of baggage. Check out this week’s VIDEO PICK for more about them.

Summer is a great time to take stock of your life and connect more to yourself, as the pace is slower and the days are longer. I’m hosting a special workshop for exploring your vision for the next year – Ignite Your Vision (Board)! will take place at Body Mind and Soul this Sunday, June 30, 2-4pm and I’d love for you to join me! You’ll dive deep into your personal purpose through a short writing exercise and then we’ll spend time making vision boards. See all about it below.

If you’re still looking for summer day camps in Houston – doncha worry! Check out my HUGE database of over 200 camps at There are camps for every child and every interest, including arts, sports, cooking, international cultures, academics, fitness, science, and much more. Check it out – you’ll LOVE it!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Stay tuned here for more details! My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for FAMILY PICKS and our Facebook page for ADULT PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me: I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of June 28-30, 2019
Picks for Adults the Weekend of June 28-30, 2019

Fun Summer Games for Kids

One of my favorite ways to hang with my kids in the summertime is with board games or sneaky educational flash cards that are fun. I highly recommend having these on hand: Uno (comes in a waterproof variety!); board games such as Apples to Apples and Rush Hour (great in the car!); Mensa cards; U.S. Presidents flash cards; and Mad Libs (great for learning grammar!). Also, be sure to check out HOUSTON-OPOLY, which is a great way to teach kids about Houston.

Texas Music Festival

It’s the 30th season anniversary of the Immanuel & Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival and they are closing out this year’s schedule this weekend with two free “Young Artist Chamber Music Performances” this Thursday, June 27 and Friday, June 28; a free “High School Jazz Institute Concert” this Friday, June 28; and their “Grand Finale” this Saturday, June 29 at 7:30pm. Single tickets are $20/adults and $15/students & seniors and all performances take place at the University of Houston central campus.

AFA is a wonderful music organization that has been enriching children’s lives with their programs for 26 years – their work includes residencies in classrooms, year-round music programs, and a “Summer Music Festival,” which is their annual training for kids that features not only music learning but also exhibition of talent. This Friday, June 28, at 7pm at Kinder HSPVA, there is a free “Sing Out! Cabaret Workshop Performance” -- bring your kids to see kids like them perform!

A.D. Players

A.D. Players

The fantastic musical “West Side Story”, presented by A.D. Players, opens this Friday, June 28 and is onstage through July 28 . It’s a twist on Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” saga in which New Yorkers Tony and Maria (from different sides of the tracks and two rival gangs) fall in love. It’s lively and fun and you’ll get to see the gorgeous George Theatre (named for founder Jeannette Clift George). Tickets start at $40 (they start at $20 for previews on June 26 and 27).

Mostly Free Arts & Crafts for Kids

Summer is a great time for kids to learn new skills and to get creative and there are several ways for them to do this. The Home Depot offers free kids’ workshops once a month; Lowe’s hosts free monthly “Build and Grow” clinics; Lakeshore Learning Center offers free kids craft Saturdays; and Michael’s hosts fun classes every Saturday and 7 weeks of summer camps for a small fee.

OCA-Greater Houston

The  Houston Asian American Pacific Islander Film Festival (HAAPIFEST) is wrapping up this Friday, June 28 with a special “Community Arts Night” at the Chinese Community Center (you’ll get to see their beautiful new building!). Featured will be live music performances, short music videos, and delish BBQ.  The full schedule of daily screenings is here -- most of the films are free.

Ignite Your Life By Making A Vision Board!

Take some time this summer to ponder your personal purpose and to bring it to life with a short writing exercise and a VISION BOARD in my two-hour workshop, “Ignite Your Vision (Board)!”, on this Sunday, June 30 from 2-4pm at Body Mind & Soul. Words and images create your reality and vision boards make it happen fast. I’ll help you jumpstart your vision with a personal mission statement and you’ll have fun creating a visual interpretation of what you want your life to look like, using materials such as magazines, colored paper, stamps, fun markers, and more. Feel free to bring photos of yourself or anything else to personalize your board. For a deeper experience, schedule a Life Path session with me in advance – I’m at the store consulting with clients on Mondays and can help you clarify your goals and move forward in creating the life you truly want. More info about the Life Path sessions is here and you can register for the workshop here. I look forward to igniting your life!

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. It’s #GishPicks #CuratedCulture to help you plan your weekend! I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
