READY FOR A GREAT WEEKEND?!

Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

THOUGHTS FOR THIS WEEK

It’s Father’s Day on Sunday (June 17), y'all, so get ready to celebrate dad! I found some fun PICKS for that, including a fishing event, a kicking back event, and a jokes-about-dad event. Yeah, you know you’re looking for ideas so check mine out! On a completely different note, I wanted to follow up on the PICKS that I did last week featuring free summer movies for kids (see the PICKS here) and give you my quick PICKS of organizations that offer free or unique movies for adults (and sometimes children) year-round: 14 Pews; Alamo Drafthouse/Houston; Asia Society; Aurora Picture Show; Blaffer Art Museum; Café Brasil; Contemporary Arts Museum; Discovery Green; DiverseWorks; Holocaust Museum; Jewish Community Center; Landmark River Oaks Theatre; Menil Collection; Miller Outdoor Theatre; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Orange Show Center for Visionary Art; and Rice Cinema. Happy viewing!

MORE ABOUT THIS BLOG

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Tune in here each Friday from 12-12:30pm to join the convo. My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKSand our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

SPREAD THE WORD!

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Summer Reading

BOOKIN’ IT:
SUMMER READING PROGRAMS

Yes, school is out but that doesn’t mean the books around your house need to gather dust. There are a lot of fun-and-free reading programs – many of them through your local library. Here are a handful of the library ones taking place all summer long: Harris County Public Library; Houston Public Library; Fort Bend County Public Library; and Montgomery County Public Library. For non-library reading programs, check out this list.

Dad Jokes

THE SECRET GROUP

Dads deserve to be made fun of (you know they do…), so The Secret Group has created a super fun Dad Jokes comedy show this Sunday, June 17 that will complement all those cute gifts your kids will give them (like the hand-colored tie we gave my hubby one year…). Tickets can be purchased here (only $5!) and include raffle entry for special gift baskets. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm. I’ll be there so say howdy if you see me!

Sunday Funday Father’s Day Kickback

LION’S HEART EVENT CENTER

Here’s a fun and inexpensive ($10/person) event to celebrate Daddy-O: it’s a Sunday Funday Father’s Day Kickback this Sunday, June 17, 2-6pm at the Lion’s Heart Event Center. It will be a day of fun for family and friends featuring food, games, pop up shops, and more.

The Blues: An Exhibition Featuring Houston Legends on World Stages

TEXAS CENTER FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVING HISTORY

In 1979, June was declared “African American Music Month” by then President Jimmy Carter and then in 2003, a Congressional Resolution proclaimed “Blues is a national historic treasure.” The TCAALH is celebrating those events with The Blues: An Exhibition Featuring Houston Legends on World Stages.” They’ll have an exhibition as well as live performances through June 23, all at the MATCH. This weekend features a “Racism Summit” (Friday, June 15, 7-9pm) and a “Family and Children’s Event” (Saturday, June 16, 10am-noon).

Gone Fishing

BASS PRO SHOPS

Bass Pro Shops are hosting the second weekend of their Gone Fishing event this Saturday, June 16 and Sunday, June 17, which features a free catch-and-release pond (1-4pm); “Fish Certificates,” photo downloads, and “Gone Fishing” signs plus free kids’ crafts (1-4pm) and fishing seminars for adults (1pm and 2pm).

Finding OZ

BAYOU CITY PERFORMING ARTS

It’s difficult to find creative ways to combat bullying but Bayou City Performing Arts has found a unique way with Finding OZ.” The show, onstage at the MATCH this Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16 at 7pm both nights, is a thoughtful, compassionate look at the causes and effects of bullying. Ultimately, it’s a story about the bravery it takes not only for bystanders to become “up-standers,” but also for the victims of bullying to join them in taking that yellow brick road together to a path of self-acceptance for all.

Justice & Peace Documentary Series

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL'S JUSTICE & PEACE DOCUMENTARY SERIES 2018

Christ Church Cathedral is hosting a summer Justice & Peace Documentary Series.” The Cathedral’s Justice and Peace Council members have selected one documentary to feature each month over the summer, on select Wednesday nights from 6-9pm. Mental health, the Syrian War, and racism will be the focus this year. The series will kick off with No Kidding? Me Too! on Wednesday, June 20 and will continue with Cries from Syria on Wednesday, July 11 and will wrap up with “13th” on Wednesday, August 15. Ignite Your Vision (Board)!

"IGNITE YOUR VISION (BOARD) WORKSHOP" AT BODY MIND & SOUL

I’m excited to be hosting a SUMMER vision board-making workshop! On Saturday, July 7, 2-4pm, please join me for Ignite Your Vision (Board)! at Body Mind & Soul. Take some time to ponder your personal purpose and to bring it to life with a short writing exercise and a VISION BOARD! Words and images create your reality and vision boards make it happen fast. I am an artist and I will work with you to create a visual interpretation of what you want your life to look like, using materials such as magazines, colored paper, stamps, fun markers, and more. Feel free to bring photos of yourself or anything else to personalize your board. As an added bonus, schedule a guidance session with me in advance (details below).

GUIDANCE SESSIONS (Mondays) and LABYRINTH WALKS (Second Saturdays)

I offer intuitive guidance sessions every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 10:30am-5:30pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. Let’s connect if you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both). I use my intuitive skills and my many years of studying people to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams and desires, and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. Finding your personal mission will exponentially increase your ability to succeed in life while also attracting an abundance of joy. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at ‪713.993.0550 to book an appointment. NEW: I am now doing guidance sessions by telephone – we can connect from anywhere, anytime! Call me at 713.492.1173 for more information about that service. Please note that the fee for sessions by phone is the same.

And if you’re looking for a way to increase the peace in your life, please join me for our Second Saturday Labyrinth Walks at the beautiful Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston at 500 Fannin Street. My next walk will be this Saturday, July 14, 9am-11am. Free parking is available in the Christ Church Cathedral garage at 559 San Jacinto Street; bring your ticket in to get it validated. We are creating quite a community with these monthly walks – join us! New people will tour the center and we’ll all walk the labyrinth and make art. I am a trained labyrinth facilitator and love sharing what I know with others. Register for the walk here or at the door. You’ll leave with something you’ve made, a list of Houston area labyrinths, and a handout on the art of walking labyrinths. If you’d like to read more about my work and Houston labyrinths, click here for a recent article in the Houston Chronicle.

You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
