READY FOR A GREAT WEEKEND?!

Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

THOUGHTS FOR THIS WEEK

Alrighty, SUMMER IS HERE!!! If you’re still looking for summer day camps in Houston – doncha worry! Check out my HUGE database of over 200 camps at www.DayCampsHouston.com. There are camps for every child and every interest, including arts, sports, cooking, international cultures, academics, fitness, science, and much more. Check it out – you’ll LOVE it! Summer also means swim season – I have information below about our city pools, but PLEASE do me a favor: practice good pool safety! I have already heard of several near drownings and there have already been FOUR drownings in Harris County (see that story here). Watch your kiddos and PLEASE make sure they can swim before you get near a pool or hot tub. There are free lessons being offered by the city; details on those are here. Also, I’ve heard that Katchakid offers some great products to make your home pool safer.

Houston is a great city and it’s fun to be a tourist in your own town (which is what I encourage year-round, but summer is an especially good time to explore!) and I’ve got info on how to kick that off today. My VIDEO PICK this week will get you excited! Stay tuned to GISH PICKS for information on all kinds of summer ideas: outdoors fun, movies, reading programs, games, museums, and more. I’ll keep you moving and grooving all summer long. Kick off your summer this Saturday, June 1 at Miller Outdoor Theatre’s annual “Accordion Kings and Queens” show – I’ll be there and would love to see YOU! And here’s a great way to close out your summer: head to Galveston’s East Beach on Saturday, August 24 for the annual AIA Sandcastle Competition. I’m smelling salt water already!

MORE ABOUT THIS BLOG

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Stay tuned here for more details! My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for FAMILY PICKS and our Facebook page for ADULT PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me: I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

SPREAD THE WORD AND ADVERTISE IN GISH PICKS!

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of May 31-June 2, 2019
Picks for Adults the Weekend of May 31-June 2, 2019

Outdoor Fun

OUTDOOR FUN

The weather right now is decent so take some time before it heats up to explore nature in our city. There are several outdoor spots in Houston that are perfect for kids – Miller Outdoor Theatre (with covered, air-conditioned seats!); Houston Arboretum & Nature Center (pictured); Discovery Green; Memorial Park; Hermann Park; Mercer Botanic Gardens; and Lake Houston Wilderness Park. All are free, except for the Lake Houston Wilderness Park, which is the City of Houston’s only overnight park and entry fees start at $3/person.

Be A Tourist In Your Own Town

BE A TOURIST IN YOUR OWN TOWN

If you can’t go anywhere this summer, do not despair. There’s so much to do right here – get out your walking shoes and be a tourist in your own town! Start with the Visit Houston website: you’ll find events, neighborhoods, the Houston City Pass, and much more. Be sure to check out the Houston Museum District website and cool audio tours around the city (more info here) and at the Heritage Society’s Sam Houston Park (more info here).

Trees For Houston & Houston Botanic Garden

TREES FOR HOUSTON &
HOUSTON BOTANIC GARDEN

This Saturday, June 1 at 9am, Trees For Houston will host a kids tree education class at the site of the future Houston Botanic Garden, located at 8205 North Bayou Drive. The class will teach kids about basic tree biology and the importance of trees in our urban environment. Each child will receive a “Growing Together Kit” to enhance their tree planting knowledge which includes native tree seeds, a growing container and soil, as well as a customized measuring tool and recycled pencil. Attendees may participate in a site walk after their class at 10am. NOTE: RSVP is required and space is limited!

Tango In Houston

TANGO IN HOUSTON

I went down one of those internet rabbit holes recently, when I saw that there was a “Tango Evolution” event tonight (Wednesday, May 29) at Prohibition Theatre. I started researching all things tango in Houston and landed on the Tango Houston website, the Houston Tango group Facebook page, and the Two to Tango website. There is a LOT going on! The next tango event is Milonga Brasileña, which takes place this Saturday, June 1, 8-11pm at the Emporio Brazilian Grill.

Houston Parks and Recreation Department

HOUSTON PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT

The fun begins this Saturday, June 1, when all 37 of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department outdoor pools open for summer hours through August 11; see all the info here. The department also operates 29 water spray grounds, which are open year-round. The pools are free and open to the public Tuesdays–Sundays from 1pm-8pm, except for Swimwise sites. Swimwise is a free series of learn-to-swim classes offered for all ages and skill levels from beginner to advanced, designed to teach swimming and water safety skills.

Writefest Houston

WRITEFEST HOUSTON

The Writefest Literary Festival is happening this week, with workshops, social events, presentations, and panels – much of it for writers, but some of it for the public. I recommend you peruse their website for all the events and also check out their free events which include an open mic at Bohemeo’s tomorrow (Thursday, 5/30) from 7-9pm; a “Keynote Reading with Phong Nguyen” at Brazos Bookstore on Friday, May 31 from 6-8pm; and a Saturday Night Social this Saturday, June 1 from 7-10pm at the Black Labrador.

LIFE PATH SESSIONS (Mondays) and LABYRINTH WALKS (Second Saturdays)

I offer intuitive "Life Path Sessions" every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 10:30am-5:30pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. If you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both), I will serve as your Life Path Guide. One session is all you need to get ignited! I use my intuitive skills and my many years of reading people to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams and desires, and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. I also help people who are struggling with ANY kind of issue they may encounter along life’s path: grief, relationship problems, work troubles, etc. My goal is to help people listen to their heart and to connect with sources of inspiration or guidance or support. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at713.993.0550 to book an appointment. I also do Life Path Sessions by telephone – we can connect from anywhere, anytime! Call me at 713.492.1173 for more information about that service. Please note that the fee for sessions by phone is the same.

Join me Saturday, June 8, from 10am-noon for my next monthly Second Saturday Labyrinth Walk at the beautiful Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston. We’ll tour the center, walk the labyrinth, and make art. I am a trained labyrinth facilitator and love sharing what I know with others! Register for the walk here or at the door. You’ll leave with your art, a list of Houston area labyrinths, and a handout on walking labyrinths as well as a sense of well-being and peace. Meditation does that to you!

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. It’s #GishPicks #CuratedCulture to help you plan your weekend! I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support. If you'd like to learn more, please click below.
