Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays at noon here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Whew! Summer is almost here, just around the corner, getting ready to explode on us! Are you ready?! Never fear – I will be your information captain and will keep giving you ideas for family fun, adult events, and more! Stay tuned here for all of that and please share GISH PICKS with your friends and family so that they, too, can THRIVE and not just SURVIVE this summer.

This week’s VIDEO PICK features my appearance on “Great Day Houston” this week, where I chatted with Deborah Duncan about terrific Houston summer day camps and ideas for other family fun in the summer, such as visiting the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston for their Creation Station on Sundays and heading to the Craft Museum for their monthly “Hands-On Houston” free family craft activities on the first Saturday of each month.

Many of Houston’s arts organizations take a break over the summer to get ready for their new season in the fall but there are two that keep their doors open. The Glassell School of Art has year-round classes for adults and their registration for the summer season of classes – and workshops for those that want one-time classes – begins next Monday, May 22. See all the details below.

And over at the Alley Theatre, they are getting ready to open their fun annual “Summer Chills” series of plays about murders, mysteries, and more. This year’s series will be from July 21-August 20 and the show will be the Alfred Hitchcock comedy, “The 39 Steps.” I’ll be heading behind-the-scenes with my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS event next Friday, May 26 so tune in live here. If you’d prefer first-hand experience, the Alley is also offering their monthly backstage tour this Saturday, May 20 at 10am; see all about that here.

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and please go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of May 19-21, 2017
Picks for Adults the Weekend of May 19-21, 2017

Treble Choir of Houston

The Treble Choir of Houston is a nurturing community of diverse young women in grades 6-12 that provides them with exceptional interpersonal and musical experiences such as public performances. Their annual spring concert will be this Saturday, May 20 at 3:30pm at South Main Baptist Church. The Choir will be performing a number of songs with solos by some of the girls.

The Chosen

Theater LaB is presenting The Chosen,” an award-winning adaptation of the story of two boys, two fathers, and two very different Jewish communities – “five blocks and a world apart” – in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in the 1940’s. Set against the backdrop of WWII, the revelation of the Holocaust, and the desperate struggle of Zionism, the show is intense and timely. It closes out this Sunday, May 21.

Peter and the Starcatcher

Stageworks Theatre presents Peter and the Starcatcher,” based on the popular youth novel about friends and a mischievous boy who is like Peter Pan – but with several twists. The show is closing out this weekend with performances on Friday, May 19 at 7:30pm, Saturday, May 21 at 7:30pm, and Sunday, May 21 at 3pm.

Art Blocks Houston

There’s a funky new public art initiative around Main Street Square called Art Blocks, which is curated by the Downtown District Public Art Committee with the support of the Weingarten Art Group. This lively new program includes a series of site-specific temporary and permanent art installations as well as events and rotating exhibitions.

The Fire Museum of Houston

The Houston Fire Museum is kicking off their summer programming with fire safety chats geared at kids preK through third grade. The one-hour presentations will be this Friday, May 19 and next Friday, May 26 from 11:30am-12:30pm. The chats will end with a storytime and craft and admission is $5/adults and $3/kids 2-12.

Africa on my mind

The Houston Museum of African American Culture is a Houston jewel that I hope you will visit soon. They were recently recognized at the Alliance of American Museums’ annual meeting as a case study on “How African American Museums Can Remain Relevant.” Their current exhibition, Africa on my mind,” ends on July 1.

Glassell Studio School

Registration opens next Monday, May 22 for adult summer art classes at the Glassell School of Art. Discover your inner artist with studio courses for adults of all skill levels, or further your arts education with an art history class. Don’t want to commit to the full summer semester? Check out the short-term workshops.

You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
