Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting! AND – lucky you, I’ll be posting them here as my weekly VIDEO PICK when I can.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKSand our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce! I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and I would love to help you out by promoting it here. You’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

I have been out and about in Houston a lot recently, meeting many of you (and having a blast!), so I am happy to have a large number of brand-new readers to GISH PICKS. Welcome here! I hope you enjoy it. I give it my all when writing this blog, always looking for interesting news to share and places to explore. And I like to tell you a little about what I’m up to when I can. I write two monthly columns: “Gish at the Movies” in Local Houston Magazine and “Ignite Your Life!” in Natural Awakenings Houston Magazine. Whenever you see my banner ads with those images, click on each and you’ll see my most recent column (to make it easy for you, my May columns are here (Gish at the Movies) and here (Natural Awakenings). I do intuitive guidance sessions by telephone and at Body Mind and Soul each Monday and I lead monthly “Second Saturday Labyrinth Walks at the Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer. Details about those are below. And... coming soon, I’ll share more details about my What’s Your Purpose?” workshop on Sunday, June 3 and my “Ignite Your Vision (Board)!” workshop in July, both at Body Mind and Soul. My goal is to ignite your life not only with unique places and culture in Houston, but also with information about how to be the best YOU that you can be.

Picks for Kids the Weekend of May 11-13, 2018
Picks for Adults the Weekend of May 11-13, 2018

La Piccola Cucina: Mother’s Day Edition

Occasionally, the Italian Cultural and Community Center will do fun cooking classes for kids. This Saturday, May 12, from 11:30am-1pm, kids 3-10 years old can make goodies for their moms. In La Piccola Cucina: Mother’s Day Edition,” children will wear chef aprons and toques and learn basic Italian language, metric system, and culture while preparing authentic Italian cuisine.

An Evening with Lager Rhythms

This Friday, May 11 at 8pm, join Lager Rhythms for their concert and live recording session An Evening with Lager Rhythms.” I’m a huge fangirl so strongly recommend this PICK! It’s their first such concert in a long while – from their description: “For many months now, Lager Rhythms have been trying to get into a studio to lay down our 'new' songs that have yet to be recorded for posterity. We've been hampered by schedules, sick singers, jobs, and scarce studios. But we recently realized what we need to overcome these obstacles: one single night, a beautiful venue, and most importantly - you!”

Music Doing Good is an organization that brings music to children in Houston who would otherwise not have access. Their final show of the year, is this Friday, May 11 at 7:30pm. It’s inspired by their curriculum that focuses on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) utilizing the techniques of Mindful Hip-Hop, a term coined by California hip-hop artist and instructor JusTme that focuses on well-being, compassion, and awareness framed in youth-friendly language.

Small Ball

You never know what Catastrophic Theatre will do next! “Small Ball” is a world premiere basketball musical produced by the Houston Rockets' general manager Daryl Morey (by the way: GO ROCKETS!) and directed by brilliant CT founders Jason Nodler and Tamarie Cooper. It’s been described as weird but good – and began from a question from Nodler to Morey: "What about a basketball musical? We both love basketball and we both love (Mickle) Maher’s work, so what if we asked him to write a basketball musical for us? Whatever that means." There you have it. It closes this Saturday, May 12, and their pay-what-you-can tickets are selling FAST.

Around the World in 80 Days

The Company OnStage presents shows that are not only fun for kids but that are also always around one hour in length. Around the World in 80 Days is here through June 3 and is an adaptation of the Jules Verne novel.

The story begins with a bank robbery by a mysterious figure and quickly becomes a crazy adventure involving mistaken identities, the Scotland Yard, and locomotives. All Company OnStage shows take place at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Jewish Leading Ladies of Bollywood

If you weren’t able to catch many FotoFest 2018 exhibitions, you are in luck because one of the official shows, Jewish Leading Ladies of Bollywood,” is up through May 31 at the Congregation Beth Israel. The exhibition includes 30+ pieces that spotlight Jewish stars of the Bollywood screen, sampled from the extensive collection of Kenneth X and Joyce Robbins. Nadira, Sulochana and Pramila – three of the most famous Jewish leading ladies of Bollywood – are pioneering and alluring Baghdadi actresses featured during the prime of their careers, along with other “greats” in photographs, posters, postcards, and fan magazines.

GUIDANCE SESSIONS (Mondays) and LABYRINTH WALKS (Second Saturdays)

I offer intuitive guidance sessions every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 10:30am-5:30pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. Let’s connect if you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both). I use my intuitive skills and my many years of studying people to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams and desires, and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. Finding your personal mission will exponentially increase your ability to succeed in life while also attracting an abundance of joy. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at ‪713.993.0550 to book an appointment. NEW: I am now doing guidance sessions by telephone – we can connect from anywhere, anytime! Call me at 713.492.1173 for more information about that service. Please note that the fee for sessions by phone is the same.

And if you’re looking for a way to increase the peace in your life, please join me for our Second Saturday Labyrinth Walks at the beautiful Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston at 500 Prairie Street. My next walk will be this Saturday, May 12, 9am-11am. Free parking is available in the Christ Church Cathedral garage at 559 San Jacinto Street; bring your ticket in to get it validated. We are creating quite a community with these monthly walks – join us! New people will tour the center and we’ll all walk the labyrinth and make art. I am a trained labyrinth facilitator and love sharing what I know with others. Register for the walk here or at the door. You’ll leave with something you’ve made, a list of Houston area labyrinths, and a handout on the art of walking labyrinths. Please note that there will be no walk in June and that my next walk will be Saturday, July 14. If you’d like to read more about my work and Houston labyrinths, click here for a recent article in the Houston Chronicle.
