Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays at noon here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

This is a big weekend: it’s Mother’s Day and many college graduations are also happening. Congrats to all the graduates out there! And thank you to all the moms! My friend and fellow mama Monica Danna-Garcia calls it #MamaChristmas. Sure, we moms want to be loved and appreciated year-round – and you know we should be! – but the second Sunday in May is a great reminder to dads and kids (ahem) that Mama is susper special and deserves to be celebrated! I have a couple of Mother’s Day-related events below – the Houston Latin American Philharmonic has a special “Mother’s Day Serenade” on Sunday (they’re this week’s VIDEO PICK, too) and actor/producer Tracy Ahern (best known for her turn in Girls Only: The Secret Comedy of Women) is bringing us a hilarious show about exhausted moms and universal love – “Motherhood Out Loud” from May 11-21 at MATCH.

One last thing: I’ve been a follower of the Standing Women website, and every year, they ask that women around the world stand together at 1pm (local time zone) on Mother’s Day. The organization was originally inspired by a wonderful short story Sharon Mehdi wrote for her five-year old granddaughter, “The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering” (to read that story, click on the language of your choice here). It’s a beautiful story and the website is a gathering spot for a beautiful premise: women standing together in a vision for compassion for one another and for a world in which every child is safe, honored, and nurtured. I hope you will take one minute out of your day to stand with Standing Women this Sunday.

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and please go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Pearland Concerts in the Park

You know it’s almost summer when Pearland’s Concerts in the Park are onstage again! Each Friday in May and June from 7-9pm, Southdown Park is home to free concerts and fun. The schedule includes Big Joe Walker, Adrians Fault, and Mango Punch; families can buy a Friday Night Family Pack that includes a yummy picnic and even bug spray.

Motherhood Out Loud

Finally – mothers I can relate to! Motherhood Out Loud is a collection of fifteen scenes and monologues, performed by four of Houston's most beloved actors. Utterly unpredictable, Motherhood Out Loud shatters traditional notions about parenthood, unveils its inherent comedy, and celebrates the invincible force that spans and unites generations – unconditional love! The show is onstage from May 11-21 and you can purchase tickets here. Please note that this show is for adults only.

Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts

The Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts is hosting their last “Family Day” of 2017 this Saturday, May 13 from 11am-3pm. This special event is free and open to the public and features special hands-on art projects, art demonstrations, performances, and more for kids 5 years old and up. Each “Family Day” is inspired by exhibitions on view; the current shows can be found here. The Museum is located in Spring, Texas.

Houston Latin American Philharmonic

The Houston Latin American Philharmonic presents its annual Mother’s Day Serenade this Sunday, May 14 at 5pm. The program will include Amor Eterno, El Día que me Quieras, La Gota Fría, and Tribute to Lila Morillo. The Houston Latin Phil is the only professional orchestra in the United States created to present full programs of Latin American music exclusively.

The Lion King Experience Jr.

PH 1960 Young Actors Stage presents Disney’s “The Lion King Experience Jr.” through May 21. The show features kids from the Playhouse 1960 and is the coming-of-age story of life in the African savannah with Simba, Rafiki, and many other characters as they journey from Pride Rock to the jungle and… back again. Tickets are available here.

VOX - The Rob Seible Singers

This Saturday, May 13 at 7:30pm, VOX presents Grand Finale!, celebrating their ten years of sharing the love of singing and their joy of engaging, enriching, and entertaining through innovative performances of great works of the choral literature. To mark his, and the group's retirement, Rob Seible, VOX’s founder and artistic director, has selected some of his favorite pieces performed over the last ten years.

RISE” bracelets

I’ve been making “RISE” bracelets in honor of woman power and to raise funds for both the Women’s March on Washington and the Women’s Home, which assists women who are homeless due to addiction, prison, or economics. It’s been my honor to take donations in exchange for the bracelets and then to donate the money to good causes, causes that help women. In this time of an assault on women, it’s important to RISE and be strong and take back our power! That’s a great message for women and a particularly strong one for women who are graduating. Find out more about the project and order your very own RISE bracelet(s) here. Fifty percent of all purchases will go back to the Women’s Home.

West U Essentials Magazine

I am the “Summer Camp Queen” since I have been producing the largest and most accurate guide to summer day camps in Houston since 2004! I hope you’ll check out and use my guide to camps, THE SUMMER BOOK® ONLINE: A GUIDE TO HOUSTON DAY CAMPS AND CLASSES FOR KIDS AND TEENS. I’ve helped many a family find the perfect fit for their child(ren). For this month, I worked with the new-and-fab West U Essentials Magazine to scout out great camps in Bellaire and West University. Check out my article in the mag on pages 17 and 18. Organizations featured are A.D. Players; Bellaire Recreation Center; Building Brains; Language Kids World; Main Street Theater; Psynergy Psychological Associates; Salle Mauro Fencing Academy; and the West University Place Parks and Recreation Department.

By the way, if you need help finding summer camps for your kids or a speaker to come to your group to share about Houston area day camps, summertime fun, parenting, cultural activities, and more – please contact me! I’d love to help you out (for free!) and I am available for hire to speak to groups. Call me at 713.492.1173 or email
