Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

It’s Screen-Free Week through Sunday, May 5 and I love this annual event, which is a reminder to unplug, re-connect, and do what I like to call “Phone down, face up.” Check out their website for ideas and inspiration. This Saturday, May 4 is “World Labyrinth Day,” an event that is celebrated annually by labyrinth lovers around the world on the first Saturday in May. Labyrinths are a great way to go screen-free: walking one creates a sense of peace and quiet and gives you a chance to slow down and turn within. If you’d like to try out a labyrinth in Houston this Saturday, check out our list of Houston area labyrinths here and you can also join our Facebook group, Houston Labyrinth Walkers. I’ll be leading three labyrinth walks over the next 2 months: I’ll be doing my usual Second Saturday Labyrinth Walks on May 11 and June 8 at the Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer and I’ll be doing a labyrinth walk & workshop for Young Audiences at Levy Park on Saturday, June 15 – see more about that event here.

This Sunday is Cinco de Mayo -- a celebration of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The day is a minor holiday in Mexico, but we LOVE to enjoy it here! Houston has a “Cinco de Mayo” Parade this Saturday, May 4 in downtown Houston starting at Texas and Hamilton Streets at 10am (it’s hosted by LULAC District 8). Miller Outdoor Theatre presents Grammy® Award winning artist Lupillo Rivera on Sunday night at 8pm (see info here) and Discovery Green is presenting Kinder HSPVA’s mariachi and ballet folklorico students from 3-5pm on Sunday (see info here). The Children’s Museum of Houston is hosting Ballet Folklórico Las Américas on Sunday at 3pm (see info here) and, since this is Houston where we LOVE food trucks, there’s a Cinco de Mayo Food Truck Festival on Sunday from 11am-7pm. Some of my PICKS this week also celebrate Mexican/Latin culture so there’s plenty to choose from!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Stay tuned here for more details! My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for FAMILY PICKS and our Facebook page for ADULT PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me: I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of April 26-28, 2019
Picks for Adults the Weekend of April 26-28, 2019

Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC)

It’s the first Saturday of the month and time for “Hands-On Houston” at HCCC this Saturday, May 4 from 11am-3pm. Kids will get to enjoy the Museum’s Craft Garden, where they’ll make a bamboo bee house by using natural materials such as bamboo and dyed hemp to construct a bee house and they’ll get to explore the variety of dye plants in the garden. The event is free and will take 25 minutes to complete. Be sure to tour the Museum before or after your crafty fun!

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

My May GISH AT THE MOVIES focus is “Latin Wave 14” at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston this Thursday, May 2 through Sunday, May 5. Presented by the MFAH and Fundación Proa, the festival focuses on new films from Latin America -- this year's fest features selections from Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, and more. "Latin Wave" was an initiative that began through a partnership with Tenaris In Texas, PROA, and the MFAH, when cinema from Latin America was experiencing a renaissance. See the full schedule of films here

City of Houston Waterworks Education Center

Every year in May, the WaterWorks Education Center hosts a special “WaterWorks Festival” to celebrate the fact that “Water=Life” and to educate Houstonians about the Center (see this week’s VIDEO PICK for a quick tour!), which is available weekdays for field trips. This year’s free Festival will take place this Friday, May 3 from 9am-noon at Levy Park and visitors can learn about the City’s high-quality drinking water, our drinking water supply and treatment system, water conservation and efficiency initiatives, and much more.

Houston Grand Opera

As always, the Houston Grand Opera is BUSY. They have two productions onstage right now, both full of fire! “Don Giovannicloses out this Sunday, May 5 – it’s the story of womanizer Giovanni and his adventures as he travels across Europe. “The Phoenix” is on through May 10 and is the story of librettist Lorenzo da Ponte (whose work includes “Don Giovanni”) – known for his scandalous life and being saved from it by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Calpulli Mexican Dance Company

The Calpulli Mexican Dance Company is presenting only one show of their beautiful production “Puebla: The Story of Cinco de Mayo” on this Friday, May 3 at 7:30pm at the Wortham Theater Center. Folkloric and native traditions in song and dance will guide the audience through the influences that led to the famous battle, its heroes, and the undeniable Mexican spirit that continues to inspire us today. Tickets start at $35.

MECA Houston

This Friday, May 3 at 8pm, MECA Houston presents “Yo Soy Un Hombre Sincero,” in which percussionist Craig Hauschildt and violinist Jackson Guillen team up to present a concert of chamber music that examines personal identity as it is expressed through sound. Although both musicians share a classical music training, they each bring wholly different cultural experiences to their musical identities. This concert will explore the ways in which music becomes the commonality that ties us together. Tickets are $15/each.

GUIDANCE SESSIONS (Mondays) and LABYRINTH WALKS (Second Saturdays)

I offer intuitive guidance sessions every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 10:30am-5:30pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. Let’s connect if you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both). I use my intuitive skills and my many years of studying people to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams and desires, and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. Finding your personal mission will exponentially increase your ability to succeed in life while also attracting an abundance of joy. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at ‪713.993.0550 to book an appointment. NEW: I am now doing guidance sessions by telephone – we can connect from anywhere, anytime! Call me at 713.492.1173 for more information about that service. Please note that the fee for sessions by phone is the same.

Join me on Saturday, May 11, from 10am-noon (NEW TIME!) for my monthly Second Saturday Labyrinth Walk at the beautiful Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston. We’ll tour the center, walk the labyrinth, and make art. I am a trained labyrinth facilitator and love sharing what I know with others! Register for the walk here or at the door. You’ll leave with your art, a list of Houston area labyrinths, and a handout on walking labyrinths.
