Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting! AND – lucky you, I’ll be posting them here as my weekly VIDEO PICK when I can.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKSand our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce! I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and I would love to help you out by promoting it here. You’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

It’s that wonderful time of year – time for the Houston Art Car Parade! It will be back on Allen Parkway this Saturday, April 14 and, as always, my Phoenix Rising Art Car will roll in it. My car is #163 and you can see a picture of it below, along with a handy list of art car events. There is an interest in all things Japanese in Houston right now: the Japan America Society of Houston just presented Celebrate Japan,” the Rothko Chapel just presented In a Moss Garden: the Sounds of Japan,” and the movie Ramen Heads will be opening here at the end of the month. This week you can also get a taste of Japan so be sure to scroll through my PICKS to see what’s happening. I lived in that country for three years so I love all these events!

Did you know that among the many things I do – I’m a monthly columnist for both Natural Awakenings Houston magazine and Local Houston Magazine? For this month’s Gish at the Moviescolumn, I previewed the glamorous Hollywood story portrayed in Cleo at the Alley Theatre; see my article here. And the April edition of my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! column focused on Way #4 from my 12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily,” which is “Commune with nature (commune).” See my article about how nature can comfort you here.

It’s a busy time for parents as we get ready for end-of-school activities and SUMMER! If you need summer day camps for your kids, doncha worry – I’ve got you covered. Check out my guide, THE SUMMER BOOK® ONLINE: A GUIDE TO HOUSTON DAY CAMPS AND CLASSES FOR KIDS & TEENS, at the easy-to-remember website, You can search through over 200 camps by age, area of town, cost, and much more. There’s a camp for every child, every age, every interest! If you’d like more information about summer camps, I’ll be at the Children’s Museum first Wednesday “Mommy Mingle” each month – the next one is Wednesday, May 2 from 10am-noon. I’ll have lots of fliers and events information and I’d love to help you out!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of April 13-15, 2018
Picks for Adults the Weekend of April 13-15, 2018

Phoenix Rising Art Car

Get ready for this year’s Houston Art Car Parade! There are many events happening this week in addition to the parade so mark your calendars now: the Sneak Peek at Discovery Green is this Thursday, April 12, 6-10pm; the legendary Art Car Ball is this Friday, April 13, 7-11pm at City Hall; and the PARADE (woo hoo!) is this Saturday, April 14, starting at 2pm. The art cars will be back on Allen Parkway, so we artists are very excited!

Dark Matter: A Collection of Shorts by Don Nigro

Mildred’s Umbrella is presenting Dark Matter: A Collection of Shorts by Don Nigro through this Saturday, April 14. Originally conceived and produced in 2007 by Artistic Director Jennifer Decker, Dark Matter combined a selection of five short plays from Nigro’s “Tales from the Red Rose Inn” in a festival-like atmosphere with spare sets that underscored the strength of the scripts, acting, and direction. For the reboot, Decker has partnered with Associate Artistic Director Miranda Herbert Morris to bring to life ten of the shorts.

Discovery Green B!rthday Bash

I can’t believe it, but this year marks the 10th anniversary of Discovery Green (it seems like it’s always been here!) They are celebrating with a B!rthday Bash this Sunday, April 15 from noon-6pm. There will be plenty of activities for kids and adults, including Cirque la Vie performances and a fashion show by the Dr. Kirk Lewis Career and Technical High School, plus all kinds of dancing: belly dancing, salsa, hip hop, flamenco, and more.

TAO: Drum Heart

Be sure to catch the one-time-only presentation of TAO: Drum Heart this Saturday, April 14 at Jones Hall. Drum Tao is a modern drum ensemble that bases their beats on the traditional art of Japanese drumming – they are so popular that they are known as the best group in Japan. This newest production, “Drum Heart,” has critics raving about their extraordinary precision, energy, and stamina. I’m part of a couple of drum circles and am so excited about this show!

Paddle N Pedal Fest

This Saturday, April 14, from 8:30am-3pm (rain or shine), the Paddle N Pedal Fest takes place at two adjacent locations: the Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve and CHI St. Luke’s Hospital/The Vintage. The festival activities such as youth attractions, food trucks, CHI St. Luke's Health and Wellness Tent, and other exhibitor booths will be located at the Festival Site. Outdoors activities such as geocaching, bicycling, and boat rides will be located at the Nature Preserve Site.

Viva Frida!

It’s all about Frida Kahlo at the Viva Frida! festival, presented by the East End Studio Gallery this weekend. There’s a “Frida Group Art Show” at Hardy and Nance Studios on view through Saturday, April 14 at 6pm and a “Festival on the Esplanade” at 2600 Navigation Boulevard this Friday, April 13, 5-10pm and this Saturday, April 14, noon-10pm.

GUIDANCE SESSIONS (Mondays) and LABYRINTH WALKS (Second Saturdays)

I offer intuitive guidance sessions every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 10am-5:30pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. Let’s connect if you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both). I use my intuitive skills and my many years of studying people to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams and desires, and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. Finding your personal mission will exponentially increase your ability to succeed in life while also attracting an abundance of joy. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at ‪713.993.0550 to book an appointment.

And if you’re looking for a way to increase the peace in your life, please join me for our Second Saturday Labyrinth Walks at the beautiful Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston at 500 Prairie Street. My next walk will be Saturday, May 12, 9am-11am. Free parking is available in the Christ Church Cathedral garage at 559 San Jacinto Street; bring your ticket in to get it validated. We are creating quite a community with these monthly walks – join us! New people will tour the center and we’ll all walk the labyrinth and make art. I am a trained labyrinth facilitator and love sharing what I know with others. Register for the walk here or at the door. You’ll leave with something you’ve made, a list of Houston area labyrinths, and a handout on the art of walking labyrinths.

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. It’s #GishPicks #CuratedCulture to help you plan your weekend! I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
