Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting! AND – lucky you, I’ll be posting them here as my weekly VIDEO PICK when I can.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKSand our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

It’s April, which means it’s “National Poetry Month,” something I love to celebrate each year. Writers in the Schools/WITS kicks it off in a lovely way each year with their month-long celebration of poetry, featuring poems by children, public art, and several poetry-inspired events. Below is the poem that kicked off the month – wow, it’s beautiful! If you’re wanting to hear some cool teens bring their poems to life – head over to Discovery Green this Sunday, April 8 at 3pm for the Meta-Four Houston “WITS Grand Slam.” Meta-Four Houston is the face of the youth poetry slam scene here – it’s a team of youth who work with local poet and teacher Outspoken Bean in this WITS program. The team represents Houston to the world at the international Brave New Voices festival – currently, they are ranked #5. If you aren’t already impressed with this generation of teens, this event will change your mind. They are creative, they are passionate, and they have a LOT to say! By the way – on a related note, Independent Bookstore Day is an annual event on the last Saturday in April – this year, it’s Saturday, April 28. Make a note and stay tuned for events that I round up! And now, enjoy a poem…

By Angela, 12th grade

I am seed
I am small, but powerful
I am born of fire & water
of desert & ocean
of la tierra de los Aztecas y la jungla de Veraguas
Of parents with humble beginnings to give me
a beginning better than theirs
I am a tree trunk foundation
My foundation is divine, residing in God’s hands in heaven
and built on my mother’s passion & my father’s song
Music runs through my veins.
My crown is full of thoughts, hopes, & dreams
It has the memories of all the family I’ve had
Full of songs to be sung & dreams to be made
Full of light that reaches out to the universe
I am a majestic tree
My roots are Adonis, Flor, my grandparents, my aunts & uncles
They are as deep as the ocean, as high as the mountains
I am deeply rooted in my faith, my culture, mi gente, & my music
Nothing can uproot me.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Finished sculptures will be mounted onto foam bases for participants to take home.

Race, Film, and Reconciliation

Conversations about the black experience in America are important and timely – so I highly recommend Race, Film, and Reconciliation event this Friday and Saturday (April 6 and 7) at the Hines Center. Three films will be screened: “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” “Do the Right Thing,” and “Get Out” and discussions following each will be led by Dr. Greg Garrett, who recently presented on race and film at a conference in Washington, D.C. Tickets are $30/non-members and include a box lunch.

SHREK the Musical

Since 1987, HITS Theatre has partnered with Miller Outdoor Theatre and the City of Houston to present a Broadway-style musical theatre production to Houstonians and visitors, free of charge. This weekend (April 5-7), HITS Theatre wraps up their presentation of SHREK the Musical – featuring 32 students and a fire-breathing dragon! There are free tickets for the air-conditioned seats available the day of the show.

Art in the Park

Midtown Houston presents Art in the Park this Saturday, April 7, from 10am-6pm. The free day-long event takes place at Elizabeth Baldwin Park and will feature local and regional artists presenting their art for viewing and for sale. There will be music and delicious treats, plus a caravan of art cars (including mine, Phoenix Rising Art Car!)

Children's India Culture Fest

This Saturday, April 7, from noon-6pm, enjoy the Children's India Culture Fest,” a showcase event highlighting the greatness of India and its culture with a cultural fest, quiz competition, and art competition. Kids will get to enjoy hands-on exhibits, a puppet show by The Dancing Peacock Puppet Company, dance and theatrical performances, kids’ arts and crafts station, henna, traditional Indian games, Indian food, and much more. My Beloved… meet me at the prom
