Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays at noon here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

It’s so important to get involved in politics and to be aware of who represents you! I did some research this week and created a huge excel spreadsheet detailing my representatives – from the city level on up to the federal level – and I included phone numbers, email addresses, and office addresses. It’s great to have that handy. To find your city council reps, click here and to get the list of your Texas reps (state and federal level), click here. Now you can make your own spreadsheet!

I just discovered that Houston has its very own “Youth Ambassador,” who is quite a gifted and intelligent 10 year old. Check out Yash Semlani in this week’s VIDEO PICK. It was his idea to create that position and he made it happen by writing a letter to the Mayor. Wow! Want to get kids inspired to learn more about our government? Head straight back to the 1970s...the producers of “Schoolhouse Rock” released an excellent “Election Collection” DVD set in honor of the 30th anniversary. It’s got some of the old favorites (remember “I’m just a bill…and I’m sitting here on Capitol Hill”?!) as well as new ones. Also, the Boy Scouts have a great book that is part of the merit badge series: Citizenship in the Community. You can access it online or purchase it from a scout shop.

College kids can learn more by checking out this resourceful website and there are a couple of great resources for adults: Civics 101” from New Hampshire Public Radio and the PBS “Crash Course Government and Politics. After compiling that spreadsheet, I realized I needed a refresher course on the convoluted structure of our government and those websites helped.

“Women’s History Month” ends soon and we are partying at Body Mind & Soul this Saturday, March 25, 6-7:30pm with a book launch. My friend and author Monette Chilson has written My Name is Lilith, a children’s book to celebrate the current feminine rising with a fresh look at Lilith, a mythical figure who was demonized for her strength. While the book is written for an elementary/tween audience, the dreamy watercolor illustrations (each a mini masterpiece) and the compelling story will speak to women of all ages about their power within. I hope to see you there! Kids are welcome and mocktails and light snacks will be served.

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!
