Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting! AND – lucky you, I’ll be posting them here as my weekly VIDEO PICK when I can.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKSand our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Picks for Kids the Weekend of March 16-18, 2018
Picks for Adults the Weekend of March 16-18, 2018

Inprint Cool Brains! Spring Break Fest

This Sunday, March 18, Inprint is hosting an afternoon adventure of words and play at the Inprint Cool Brains! Spring Break Fest,” featuring U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera. The fun-filled afternoon will kick off at 2pm with several activities including word play and on-the-go poetry (plus popsicles!) At 3pm, Mr. Herrera will introduce his new one-of-a-kind book for middle-graders on writing poetry, Jabberwalking – the first 200 families will receive a free signed copy of the book and there will be copies for sale after his talk.

Houston St. Patrick’s Day Parade

This Saturday, March 17 at noon, the Houston St. Patrick’s Day Parade will begin from the clock tower at 1800 Texas Avenue, rain or shine! This year’s theme is “Houston Strong. Irish Proud.” The two-hour parade has historically been one of the largest in the U.S. and each year includes over 100 entries to delight the Irish and Irish-at-heart. Join them afterwards at Lucky's Pub for the Awards Ceremony and After-Party.

Spring Break

Spring break in Houston takes place this week for many kids so I wanted to share my round-up of camps and activities, which you can see here. Your kids can still do one day camps at Main Street Theater and Discover Gymnastics and there are fun activities all week at several spots around town, including at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Kinetic and Friends

Join KINETIC: The Conductorless Ensemble and local Houston creatives this Saturday, March 17 from 10am-2pm for Kinetic and Friends,” a Saturday pop up market and live chamber music performance at A 2nd Cup coffee shop. There will be a live KINETIC chamber music performance at 11:30am and 15% of proceeds from market go toward A 2nd Cup and their cause to fight human trafficking. Donations toward KINETIC and their musicians are also welcome!

McGonigel's Mucky Duck St. Patrick's Day

The Mucky Duck is hosting their annual family-friendly St. Patrick's Day celebration this Saturday, March 17 starting at 11am. There will be a tea party for kids (suggested for 5 years old and up) at 12:30pm with treats, crafts, and Irish singing and dancing with Rowan, Titania, and Crystal (3 Irish Faeries!) Throughout the day, there will also be traditional Irish food and drink booths outside under a big top tent and there will be bagpipe players as well as other musicians.

Reflections of the Past

The Czech Center Museum Houston (one of my favorite hidden gems!) traces the grand legacy of watercolorist Hunter George in a special exhibition entitled Reflections of the Past that’s on view through March 30. The exhibition features imagery of Europe’s romantic landscape and historical architecture produced by the modern-day master of watercolor. The show demonstrates the undeniable strength and versatility of this venerable medium as it has been used to capture the unique beauty of Central European’s countryside.

LABYRINTH WALKS (Second Saturdays) and GUIDANCE SESSIONS (Mondays)

I offer intuitive guidance sessions every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 10am-5:30pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. Let’s connect if you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both). I use my intuitive skills and my many years of studying people to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams and desires, and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. Finding your personal mission will exponentially increase your ability to succeed in life while also attracting an abundance of joy. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at ‪713.993.0550 to book an appointment.

And I’m pleased to announce that my Second Saturday Labyrinth Walks will continue at the Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston at 500 Prairie Street. My next walk will be on Saturday, May 12, 9am-11am (there will be no walk on April 14). Free parking is available in the Christ Church Cathedral garage at 559 San Jacinto Street; bring your ticket in to get it validated.

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. It’s #GishPicks #CuratedCulture to help you plan your weekend! I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
