Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting! AND – lucky you, I’ll be posting them here as my weekly VIDEO PICK when I can.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKSand our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Whew! Life moves at an ever-quickening pace as we swing into spring! I meditate each morning for at least 15 minutes and I swear by it because it gets me centered, quiets my busy mind, and helps get me ready to FACE THE DAY. I gave a talk recently where I shared about my meditation practice and a woman asked me where she could get some pointers on meditating in Houston. I love those kinds of questions – as a cultural sleuth and info-preneur, I’m always up for a challenge! And I LOVE to create round-ups of various kinds (such as my weekly PICKS). I researched meditation spots and asked friends where they go and below is what I found; click on each link to go directly to information about classes. Please take advantage of these great resources for calming down in Houston – I promise that you’ll feel better and you’ll be in a more peaceful frame of mind throughout the day. Heck, I’m getting calm just writing about these places! And how cool is it that Houston has so many interesting groups?!

A couple of other things I want to highlight to you – there are two recovery organizations that are hosting fundraisers – Teen and Family Services is hosting their annual spring luncheon next Thursday, March 8 and the Council on Recovery has their annual luncheon on Thursday, April 26. You can purchase tickets for both of them now. And on the lighter side, there are two museum happenings for families soon – this Saturday, March 3, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is hosting their annual “Craft Community Day and the Children’s Museum of Houston is hosting their monthly first Wednesday “Mommy Mingle” next Wednesday, March 7 from 10am-noon. I’m the only media sponsor of that event – so I’ll be there and would love to meet YOU! There’s free coffee and healthy snacks too – YUM.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of March 2-4, 2018
Picks for Adults the Weekend of March 2-4, 2018

Craft Community Day

This Saturday, March 3 from 11am-3pm, come enjoy the annual Craft Community Day at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. This free spring event features local artist guilds and community groups as well as craft demonstrations, tours of artists’ studios, and much more! Food and refreshments will be available for purchase and you’ll get to see the exhibitions on view as well as visit their gift shop full of many unique, hand-crafted items.

Leap and the Net Will Appear

I can’t wait to see this show! Leap and the Net Will Appear is one woman’s highly theatrical, time-hopping search for adventure, for love, and for her true self. Packed with wildly eccentric family members and unpredictable lovers, Margie’s journey is at turns uproariously funny and probingly melancholic. The show is onstage through March 3 and all tickets are pay-what-you-can (really!)

Cultural Kite Festival

Each spring, the City of Sugar Land hosts a free Cultural Kite Festival at two parks: the Brazos River Park and the Crown Festival Park. This popular activity presents a mixture of cultures and diversity and will include kite and chalk art contests, cultural performances, kite-making workshop for kids, and a variety of unique cultural food and beverages available for purchase. The festival is this Saturday, March 3 from 10am-2pm.

Each February, Jewish Family Service presents the ReelAbilities Film and Arts Festival,” which is a city-wide festival promoting inclusion and celebrating the lives and talents of people living with disabilities. ReelArt is a gallery exhibit that is a part of that festival; this year’s exhibit is on view at the Center for Art and Photography at Celebration Company at JFS through April 27. The show features work by visiting artist Brandon Lack, a talented artist from Austin who has Down syndrome.

Water Circus

Cirque Italia’s Water Circus show features a custom-designed water stage that travels from city to city and holds 35,000 gallons of water that performers dazzle over while thrilling the audience with every move. It’s a European style show with unique aerial acts, hand balancing, contortionists, and many other breathtaking performances. The show is at the Katy Mills Mall through March 4.

Hidden Dimensions

This Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3 at 7:30pm both nights, Uptown Dance Company is partnering with Houston’s Axiom Quartet for two performances of Hidden Dimensions,” a program of three new dance works all performed to live music. The performances, which take place at Uptown Dance Centre, feature music from three Phillip Glass String Quartets, the first Cello Suite by Benjamin Britten, and selections from Axiom Quartet’s upcoming debut album (“Axiom – Moments of Truth,” release date April 13, 2018, Parma Recordings).

TAFS Spring Luncheon

Support a great cause next Thursday, March 8 and come to the 5th annual TAFS Spring Luncheon,” which has the topic of “Faith, Resilience and Recovery.” Teen and Family Services is celebrating 16 years of family recovery in the Houston community and the luncheon will feature guest speaker Rebekah Gregory, a wife and mother whose life was forever changed as a result of the bombings at the Boston Marathon. That act of terrorism claimed her leg but it did not claim her spirit. Rebekah now travels around the country speaking out against evil and encouraging people to turn their obstacles into opportunities. The luncheon honors John Knox, Jr., TAFS Board Chairman and a longtime CEO and business owner/founder in the surety industry. Tickets can be purchased here and the event takes place at the Junior League of Houston.

GUIDANCE SESSIONS (Mondays) and LABYRINTH WALKS (Second Saturdays)

I offer intuitive guidance sessions every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 10am-5:30pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. Let’s connect if you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both). I use my intuitive skills and my many years of studying people to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams and desires, and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. Finding your personal mission will exponentially increase your ability to succeed in life while also attracting an abundance of joy. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at ‪713.993.0550 to book an appointment.

And if you’re looking for a way to increase the peace in your life, please join me for our Second Saturday Labyrinth Walks at the beautiful Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston at 500 Prairie Street. My next walk will be Saturday, March 10, 9am-11am. Free parking is available in the Christ Church Cathedral garage at 559 San Jacinto Street; bring your ticket in to get it validated. We are creating quite a community with these monthly walks – join us! New people will tour the center and we’ll all walk the labyrinth and make art. I am a trained labyrinth facilitator and love sharing what I know with others. Register for the walk here or at the door. You’ll leave with something you’ve made, a list of Houston area labyrinths, and a handout on the art of walking labyrinths.
