Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

As “Black History Month” winds down, I wanted to acknowledge the rich African American culture all around us. First of all, there are two must-see films: “Hidden Figures,” about the black women who changed our space program and “I Am Not Your Negro,” the story of the African American struggle as told by writer and activist James Baldwin. The showtimes for “Hidden Figures” are here – as you can see, it’s got a robust run at theatres all over Houston, including Sundance Houston. “I Am Not Your Negro” is also playing at plenty of theatres (see the schedule here), including the Landmark River Oaks Theatre.

As for ongoing African American culture, please check out the Houston Museum of African American Culture, which has three exhibitions focusing on three important artists: Danny Simmons, Ntozake Shange, and Malick Sidibe. The Ensemble Theatre is Houston’s only African American company – their current show, Mahalia,” about the gospel singer who played a large role in the Civil Rights movement, closes this weekend on Sunday, February 26. And to round it all out, check out this week’s fun VIDEO PICK, which is a tour of the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum. You can see more about that special place in my KID PICK below.

Want to get to know yourself better? Then please join me for two workshops that I am presenting in March; all the details are below. The first one is “A (Fun) Boot Camp for Igniting Your Life!” on Saturday, March 4, 1:30-4:30pm at the Jung Center of Houston and you can get more information and register here. The second workshop is “What’s Your Purpose?” on Saturday, March 11 at Body Mind & Soul. Get more information and register here. I would LOVE to see you at one or both! I promise you’ll enjoy them and you will leave much more connected to yourself and your soul’s desires.

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of February 24-26, 2017
Picks for Adults the Weekend of February 24-26, 2017

Heritage Society’s Frontier Family Day

Families can explore Texas history by visiting The Heritage Society’s Frontier Family Day this Sunday, February 26 from 1-4pm. The afternoon of learning and fun will include many activities for young and older kids, including the Celtaire String Band and two Texas longhorns who will demonstrate farm life in pioneer times. You can tour Old Place, the oldest remaining structure in Harris County, and children’s author Laurie Cockerell will read from her popular book about Sam Houston, Magnificent Sam.

Moody Center for the Arts

The much-anticipated Moody Center for the Arts is opening this weekend (February 24-26) at Rice University with a slew of free festivities, including exhibition viewings, live music by The Tontons, food trucks, and tours of the state-of-the-art, 50,000-square-foot building designed by Michael Maltzan Architecture. You can see the full schedule here. The Rice Gallery will be closing at the end of May with its final exhibition and all shows will take place at the Center after that.

Buffalo Soldiers National Museum

Check out the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, which is dedicated to the important African Americans – former slaves, freemen, and Black Civil War soldiers – who were the first to serve during peacetime. The Museum is open six days a week (free on Thursdays!) and its current exhibitions focus on World Wars I and II, the Civil War, and farming and hand tools.

Angel Otero: Everything and Nothing

The exhibition Angel Otero: Everything and Nothing is the first survey exhibition of art by Puerto Rican Angel Otero and encompasses nearly a decade of his painting and sculpture. His beautiful, colorful pieces push against the art historical narrative with seductive canvases and dynamic objects made out of porcelain and steel. The Museum is always free and the show is on view through March 19.

It’s great to take your kiddos to school theatre productions because not only will they be inspired by seeing kids onstage, but the tickets are cheap! This weekend you can catch Nation,” which is a short, 40-minute show about a made-up country at Lamar High School on Thursday, February 23 at 6pm and Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25 at 7pm. Purchase the $5 tickets here (search for “Lamar HS UIL One Act Play). Over at HSPVA, they are doing a special “Tea & Scones Gilbert and Sullivan Presentation” at 5pm on Friday, February 24 – see more about that here – and Memorial High School is getting funny with a ComedySportz match on Friday, February 24, 7-9pm.

Peckerwood Garden

Peckerwood Garden is a lovely oasis of nature in Hempstead, about an hour of Houston. This Saturday, February 25, from 10am-3pm, they are hosting their monthly (fourth Saturday) Open Days in which visitors can enjoy 1-hour guided tours of the garden led by knowledgeable docents, exploring key collections. Seasonal highlights are featured and there is the opportunity to purchase many of the plants.

Natural Awakenings Houston

Join me for "A (Fun) Boot Camp to Ignite Your Life!" at the Jung Center on Saturday, March 4, 1:30-4:30pm. We'll start out with a lovely labyrinth walk at St. Paul's Church, then we'll return to the Jung Center for introspective journaling (you'll get to keep the beautiful journal you'll use!), and learning about the 12 ways to ignite your life. We'll end the afternoon with everyone making a bracelet to take home with their favorite word from the "12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily" (trust, nourish, meditate, commune, listen, serve, love, thank, forgive, create, learn, laugh). Please register in advance here.

Local Houston Magazine

Join me for a lively "What's Your Purpose?" workshop on Saturday, March 11, from 3-5pm. This is the class for you if you are wondering what your purpose in life is! Astrologer Kevin Casey and I (an intuitive guide at Body Mind & Soul) will talk to you about ways to catch your dreams and uncover who you really are, using tools from astrology as well as personal intuition.

We'll dance, you'll write, and we'll all learn. Each class member will walk away with a better understanding of themselves and their life vision and concrete ideas on how to become who they are truly meant to be. Everyone will also write a personal mission statement based on what they learned.

Please register in advance here.

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
