Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting! AND – lucky you, I’ll be posting them here as my weekly VIDEO PICK when I can.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKSand our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

It’s the “Year of the Dog” in the Lunar calendar and the Chinese New Year starts this Friday, February 16. Several organizations around town are celebrating over the next several days – get out and see the exciting dragon dances and loads of color! The two biggest celebrations are both free – this Saturday, the Chinese Community Center is hosting their event (see KID PICK) and the Viet Hoa Shopping Center is hosting a “Lunar New Year Houston” program next weekend. The Children’s Museum of Houston is hosting an amazing “Lunar New Year WonderWeek" and the Asia Society Texas Center is hosting a “Cathay Bank Family Day: Lunar New Year” from noon-4pm this Saturday. Be sure to get your free tickets in advance; some of the performances have a small fee.

The primaries in Texas are coming up March 6 so I wanted to make you aware of an excellent event – The Future Is Female: Candidate Meet and Greet,” which is this Sunday, February 18, from 2-5pm and is a great chance to meet many of the women running for office (over 25 candidates have already committed to showing up!). Voting is soooo important in every election so I hope that you’ll educate yourself and then hit the polls. If you’d like a handy dandy resource for a list of the issues and candidates, head over to Harris Votes

And this week, I decided to send you some video love! Check out my VIDEO PICK and let’s cyber connect. I appreciate my readers and the arts and cultural organizations and wanted to send out a virtual thank you note during this week of Valentine’s LOVE. If you would like to support my efforts to bring you GISH PICKS for free every week, please click here for more information. Thanks!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of February 16-18, 2018
Picks for Adults the Weekend of February 16-18, 2018

2018 Lunar New Year Festival

The Lunar New Year starts this Friday (February 16) so the Chinese Community Center is celebrating with a huge-and-free event this Saturday, February 17, from 10am-4pm. They’ll have lion dances every hour as well as drum dances, Indian dances, children’s musical performances, and much more. The Golden Peacock Dance School, The Shaolin Temple Cultural Center, and many other Asian organizations are participating.

Bechdel Film Festival

The Bechdel Film Festival (named in honor of the Bechdel Test) will be in town through February 22 at 14 Pews and it’s a big deal because it’s the first film fest in Houston dedicated to supporting and promoting female filmmakers. Filmmaker Cressandra Thibodeaux founded the festival which features short films, feature documentaries, panel discussions, script readings, karaoke, cocktail mixers, and much more. HISD students get in free; tickets for the public are $10.

Harmony of Trees

"Hello, Trees! A Walking Serenade" is an installation at Discovery Green in which visitors can select a phrase and enjoy the transformational musical journey as they walk the path of light and sound. This Friday, February 16 from 6:30-8:30pm, Harmony of Trees is a performance featuring a piece by composer Austin Brake incorporating text representing the 10 most spoken languages in Houston and sung by two soloists with the Houston Grand Opera's HGOco initiative. The performance serves as a reminder that we are stronger together, much like the trees.

Celebrate Texas Art

The Assistance League of Houston has installed its 39th version of Celebrate Texas Art,” which will be on view through February 23. The juried show was open to artists all across Texas and was curated by Sally Sprout. The Assistance League of Houston is a volunteer group committed to serving the educational and emotional needs of children and young adults.

Wiener Dog Races

Dachshunds are the CUTEST so I just had to include this because it sounded fun: Wiener Dog Races! This Saturday, February 17, from 7-9pm, Sam Houston Race Park has teamed up with All Texas Dachshund Rescue (ATDR) for dog races in between live horse racing (note that all dogs must be pre-registered to race in the event). And if you wish, bring your non-racing dogs along for the fun. Hot dogs are only $1!

Terri Hendrix

Terri Hendrix is one of my all-time favorite singer/songwriters so I’m thrilled that she’s celebrating her 50th birthday this Saturday, February 17 at the Mucky Duck. Check out her two shows (7 and 9pm) here; you’ll get to hear lots of harmonica, blues, gospel, and soul. The prolific, multi-instrumental musician recently launched a nonprofit creative arts center serving San Marcos and beyond called OYOU, an acronym for “Own Your Own Universe.”

GUIDANCE SESSIONS (Mondays) and LABYRINTH WALKS (Second Saturdays)

I offer intuitive guidance sessions every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 10am-5:30pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. Let’s connect if you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both). I use my intuitive skills and my many years of studying people to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams and desires, and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. Finding your personal mission will exponentially increase your ability to succeed in life while also attracting an abundance of joy. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at ‪713.993.0550 to book an appointment.

And I’m pleased to announce that my Second Saturday Labyrinth Walks will continue at the Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston at 500 Prairie Street. My next walk will be on Saturday, March 10, 9am-11am. Free parking is available in the Christ Church Cathedral garage at 559 San Jacinto Street; bring your ticket in to get it validated.

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. It’s #GishPicks #CuratedCulture to help you plan your weekend! I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
