Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

I love books and meeting the authors in person is a wonderful way to bring the words to life. This weekend, there are two book events by two friends of mine. I hope you’ll check them out. The first one is a book release party for my friend and owner of the Spectrum Center, Rosa Glen Reilly. This Saturday, February 18, 6:30-8pm at the Center, Rosa will be reading from her new book of poetry, Skydiver: Poems for my Daughter, based on her experience while her beloved daughter was ill and eventually died. Snacks, tea, and wine will be served, and the book will be available for sale.

The second event is a book release party for my friend/artist/hairdresser/dog mama Trish Herrera. Trish has long been an advocate of therapy dogs and is especially proud of Angel, her therapy dog that she takes all over the city to help sick kids and adults. She’s written a book, Tales of a Therapy Dog, and is having a party this Sunday, February 19 from 2-4pm. Stop by Wavelength Hair Salon for a relaxing afternoon of Scottish treats and tea. You’ll get to meet Angel and get her paw-tograph in your book and you will meet the author, Trish Herrera, and the illustrator, Gary Yokie.

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of February 17-19, 2017
Picks for Adults the Weekend of February 17-19, 2017

Houston Central Library

There's a little nook just outside the 4th floor Kids Room of the Central Library that used to be a phone area when public phones were ubiquitous. The library’s resident artist extraordinaire Norola Morgan decided to turn that empty space into a year-long, interactive art exhibit.

Texas Yoga Conference

Enjoy “Om” in the heart of Texas this weekend (Friday, February 17-Sunday, February 19) at the Texas Yoga Conference. There will be presenters from around the country, vendors (including me!), massage therapy, and plenty of yoga classes – plus, I’m bringing my labyrinth for all to use for a walking meditation.

Garbage Island

Rec Room is a cool new performance space and is premiering a fun show for kids: “Garbage Island,” written by Abby Koenig and directed by Stephanie Wittels Wachs. This interactive show for 2 – 6 year olds is onstage February 19-March 11 (Saturdays at 10:30am).

Life Interrupted

The experience of Japanese internment is explored in this intense and hauntingly beautiful dance by Core Dance this Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18 at the Asia Society Texas Center. Tickets to Life Interrupted are $10/members and $20/non-members. There will be a talk back with the performers following each show.

Okee Dokee Brothers

This Saturday, February 18 at 3pm, childhood friends the Okee Dokee Brothers will perform at the Cypress Creek FACE. The duo has combined their passion for the outdoors with Americana Folk music, creating songs that inspire families to get outside.

Stop Traffic Party

Mad Owl Entertainment has teamed up with local leaders for a Stop Traffic Party focusing on human trafficking on Saturday, February 18 from 5pm-2am. The night of meaningful art and music will raise money to go towards organizations combating human trafficking here in Houston.

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. It’s #GishPicks #CuratedCulture to help you plan your weekend! I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
