READY FOR A GREAT WEEKEND?!

Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

I don’t know about you, but it’s been a stressful year so far. I’ve been busy with life, with our government, with events – and more! If you need a break, first take a deep breath. Do it right now as you are reading this. Then go ahead and take a few! I’m doing that while writing this so I know you can do it too. And then…consider MEDITATION. There are plenty of organizations in town that offer information about meditation and I want to tout of few of my faves. First of all, the Texas Yoga Conference is coming to town next weekend – there will be meditation sessions, yoga sessions, massage therapy (a great way to relax indeed!), and much more. Go online here and get your passes now. You’ll be glad you did! Tibetan Buddhist Center Dawn Mountain has a full calendar of offerings including “Yoga for Meditators” and a group meditation on Sunday mornings and “Kind Mind, Happy Life” for kids 4-8 years old. The Health Museum offers mindfulness meditation classes for adults and kids 6-12 years old as a perfect way to connect the body’s physical, mental, and spiritual health. And Micki Fine is our city’s mindfulness guru who uses the concepts of the world-famous Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program founded by Jon Kabat Zinn. Micki offers a regular schedule of classes and workshops and groups as well as free intro meditation sessions; check her calendar here for details.

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Natural Awakenings Houston

NATURAL AWAKENINGS HOUSTON EDITION

I'm writing a monthly article for Natural Awakenings Houston that focuses on one of my twelve ways to ignite your life each month, as detailed in my art project, IGNITE YOUR LIFE!. Each way has a word that summarizes it: this month's word was NOURISH and the way was "Take care of yourself." Check out the article here and the full list of the words and ways here.

Local Houston Magazine

“GISH AT THE MOVIES”

I also write a monthly column on art films that I’ve been wordsmithing since 1998 (whew!) called GISH AT THE MOVIES in Local Houston Magazine. For the February edition, I focused on the ReelAbilities Film Festival, which will be onscreen from February 19-23. See the full story here and I’ll see you at the movies!

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. It’s #GishPicks #CuratedCulture to help you plan your weekend! I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support. If you'd like to learn more, please click below.

Please do give me feedback and ideas, as you are out there in the trenches also looking for interesting things and I want to hear what you find.
