Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, please GO.FIND.FUN. wherever you can, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

It's Black History Month and Houston has a LOT going on - and I am here to help you navigate with my PICKS throughout the month. For starters, Houston First is kicking off a free outdoor film series celebrating the month through February 29; the first film is “The Five Heartbeats,” screening this Saturday, February 8. They also have many more events, listed here. Our libraries are presenting many programs - the Houston Public Library events are here, the Harris County Library events are here, and the Fort Bend County Library events are here.

We also have many organizations that are dedicated to telling the stories of African Americans year-round. Below is a handy list of many of them - learn about them, support them, and visit them any time you can. Be sure to watch this week’s VIDEO PICK, which highlights one of the orgs below.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Stay tuned here for more details! My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for FAMILY PICKS and our Facebook page for ADULT PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me: I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of February 7 - 9, 2020
Picks for Adults the Weekend of February 7 - 9, 2020

Acton Academy

My fellow art car maker and fab Spring Branch ISD art teacher Stephanie Walton has organized a super fun “Lovebug's Valentine's Children's Marketthis Saturday, February 8 from 9am-noon at Wilchester Elementary (13618 St Mary’s Lane). Spring Branch students (K-12) learned about principled entrepreneurship by creating handmade products or providing services around which they built a marketing strategy. Their items are for sale in this first annual pop-up marketplace.

Ensemble Theatre

The Green Book” is on through February 23 and it’s a play inspired by Victor Hugo Green’s historical The Negro Motorist Green Book. It’s the weekend and a couple are celebrating the arrival of Dr. W. E. B. DuBois for a lecture. The appearance of a white visitor, who turns out to be a Jewish Holocaust survivor, sets off a chain of events showing that racism and anti-Semitism cannot be ignored. Tickets start at $26 and can be purchased here.

McGovern Centennial Gardens

If you haven’t been to beautiful McGovern Centennial Gardens - please go. This time of year is perfect to enjoy its outdoors amenities (which includes plenty of parking!) Every Friday at 10am, they host a free Children’s Story Hour in their Family Garden. After the reading, children are invited to participate in a fun activity like coloring a picture or planting a seed to take home.

Community Artists' Collective

Dallas artist and curator Vicki Meek is being celebrated this month at both the Community Artists’ Collective and HMAAC. The Collective is hosting an exhibition of collages she created that represent the historical and inspirational contributions that Dallas’s former Bishop College (1961-1988) made to black cultural development. “Black and Blue: Lest We Forget” will be on view through February 29 and the gallery is open Thursdays through Saturdays from noon-5pm, and by appointment.

Willow Waterhole Greenway

Winter is not over yet, at least not at the Willow Waterhole. This Sunday, February 9 from 3-5pm, they’re bringing in ten tons of snow for a fun slip-and-slide that’s too cool for school. Dress for the weather and bring the whole family to this free event. You can enjoy some hot chocolate or coffee and there will be plenty of great photo ops. The address is 5300 Dryad and the park is quite a treat if you haven’t been there.

Houston Museum of African American Culture / HMAAC

HMAAC is presenting the exhibition “Vicki Meek: 3 Decades of Social Commentarythrough February 16, and this weekend they are hosting a panel discussion, “Black Feminism,” on Saturday, February 8 at 11am. As their website says: “HMAAC continues our discussion of Black Girl Magic and its take on history” - sounds great! Their annual Gala is that night at the Ensemble Theatre; click here for more info and to purchase tickets.

IT’S A VALENTINE’S SCIENCE CAMP FOR KIDS ON SATURDAY, 2/15! (registration deadline: next Monday, February 10)

Here’s a perfect way to connect a meaningful day (Valentine’s Day) with an important part of the body (the heart)! Kids will have a blast learning about their heart and making art at The HeART of Science Pop-Up camp next Saturday, February 15, 9am-noon at Resurrection MCC. Please register by Monday, February 10 because spaces are limited (more info below).

Are your kids curious about the hardest-working muscle (the heart!) in the body? They’ll learn all about it in a fun and hands-on way:

      • What blood is made of
      • How it pumps life-saving nutrients all over the body
      • The anatomy of the heart
      • The scientists who discovered the circulatory system
      • New ways to treat heart disease

This unique, one day The HeART of Science Pop-Up camp will take place on Saturday, 2/15 from 9am-noon for kids 3-12 years old, divided by age. The 3-5 year olds (accompanied by a parent/caregiver) will enjoy multi-sensory play, an arts and crafts project, and a  science storybook circle. The 6-12 year olds will have a blast with medical equipment demonstrations and special science and art projects.

Register here by next Monday, February 10; all GISH PICKS readers will receive a special $10 discount on Youth Tickets (yee haw!). Use the promo code <GISH10OFF> at checkout. If you have questions or need more help, please call 713.396.3436 or email

Women will gather in community with me at the Spectrum Center Houston for 6 Mondays from 6:30-8pm to explore their personal life path using the “12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily” concepts from my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project. You can see the 12 concepts here and the key words which we’ll explore through a variety of ways are TRUST * NOURISH * MEDITATE * COMMUNE * LISTEN * LOVE * SERVE * FORGIVE * THANK * CREATE * LEARN * LAUGH. You’ll dig deep with this focused time on YOU and self-love will be at the center of all we do. There will be art, journaling, talking, laughing, labyrinth-walking, and more! At the first meeting, you’ll be given a journal and a special set of the 12 Ways cards to use daily. Each woman will also create an easy-to-remember personal mantra to use and, during the last session, will make a bracelet with her favorite word of the 12 to take home.

The cost for the series is $200 ($205 if paying via credit card; no fee if you pay via Zelle or Venmo). If you’re interested, please email me and I’d love to have you join us!
