Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

The Lunar New Year, also known as “Chinese New Year,” kicked off yesterday -- February 5 - -and it’s the “Year of the Pig,” which (thankfully!) brings optimism and wealth. The Asia Society Texas Center celebrates it this weekend and next and all the info is in my PICK below and you can see its beauty in this week’s VIDEO PICK. There are other celebrations: the Lunar New Year at the Viet Hoa Center this Saturday and Sunday (February 9-10); the 2019 Lunar New Year Festival at the Chinese Community Center this Saturday, February 9; and the Signature Care Chinese New Year on Saturday, February 16. I promised last week that I’d explain the difference between “Lunar New Year” and “Chinese New Year” – Wikipedia spells it out here: there are many lunar festivals around the world, at different times of the year, celebrated by different groups of people. It’s a moon party, all over the world!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Stay tuned here for more details! My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for FAMILY PICKS and our Facebook page for ADULT PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me: I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of January 11-13, 2019
Picks for Adults the Weekend of January 11-13, 2019

Asia Society Texas Center

The Asia Society Texas Center is busy this “Lunar New Year”! They’re kicking it off with “Enchanting Puppetry Traditions of Henan” this Friday night (2/8) and then celebrating with events at both the Galleria and their lovely museum. The Family Day at Asia Society Texas Center will take place this Saturday (2/9) from noon-4pm and the Galleria Lunar New Year celebration will take place this weekend (2/9-2/10) and next weekend (2/16-2/17). Both events are free and feature Asian crafts and traditional lion dancing; the museum event also features native food, exhibition visits, artist demonstrations, and more.

Gish at the Movies

I created my GISH AT THE MOVIES column in 1998 for Local Houston Magazine, and now, 21 years later I’m still writing monthly movie tidbits and highlighting film events on my Facebook page (please LIKE and follow!). This month I shared a terrific round-up of 2019 films across the state, compiled by the Houston Film Commission, and I featured two festivals: the Inspire Film Festival (2/14-2/18) and the ReelAbilities Houston Film & Arts Festival (2/12-2/21). My full post is here.

National Danish Performance Team

In Denmark, gymnastics has been practiced for over 80 years to inspire people to exercise and enjoy life, and the National Danish Performance Team carries out that mission with their tours around the world. They will be in Houston for two performances: this Saturday, February 9 they’ll be performing for free at Discovery Green from 1-3pm (see more here) and at Biron Gymnastics next Tuesday, February 12 from 6-8pm (see more here); tickets are $5-$10 for that show.

Cirque du Soleil

Cirque Du Soleil is the most imaginative and daring circus troupe I have ever seen and I’m always excited to see what’s new. I recently went with my family to see “Luzia” and was blown away by the beauty, creativity, daring, and just the sheer magic of it. It’s sponsored by the Mexico Tourist Board and is a love letter to that country, filled with its costumes, color, and songs that enrich the acts. For extra fun, take a Backstage Tour (we did, it was incredible!). The circus is in town through February 24.

Saadia Faruqi

Author, speaker, and interfaith activist Saadia Faruqi has written a wonderful book for children called Meet Yasmin and she’ll be presenting it this Saturday, February 9 from noon-2pm at the Barnes and Noble/W. Gray (see more here). Yasmin Ahmad is a spirited second-grader from a multi-generational Pakistani American family who explores the world in a creative and spunky way. Click here for activity guides, a video, more about Yasmin and her many interests, and an introduction to the book’s characters.

Natachees Supper 'N Punch

Like too many others, my friend and musician Herman Kluge passed too soon due to cancer. He was gifted in his art and his friends are rallying this Saturday, February 9 from 3-7pm for a special-n-free “Musical Blowout to honor Herman Kluge's birthday.” Musicians from all over Houston will be performing, the line-up includes Grifters & Shills; Jeanne Higgins & Howard Namkin; David Becker; Biltones with Bill Donaldson; Traveler; Hand Me Downs with Tim Griffith; TAG; Moondance; Gizelle Risma Ensemble; Melted Seven with Michael Crawford; Susan Martin; and Geoff Giacco. Stay until the end – the show closes with a special surprise!

GUIDANCE SESSIONS (Mondays) and LABYRINTH WALKS (Second Saturdays)

I offer intuitive guidance sessions every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 10:30am-5:30pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. Let’s connect if you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both). I use my intuitive skills and my many years of studying people to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams and desires, and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. Finding your personal mission will exponentially increase your ability to succeed in life while also attracting an abundance of joy. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at ‪713.993.0550 to book an appointment. NEW: I am now doing guidance sessions by telephone – we can connect from anywhere, anytime! Call me at 713.492.1173 for more information about that service. Please note that the fee for sessions by phone is the same.

Join me this Saturday, February 9, from 9-11am for my monthly Second Saturday Labyrinth Walk at the beautiful Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston. We’ll tour the center, walk the labyrinth, and make art. I am a trained labyrinth facilitator and love sharing what I know with others! Register for the walk here or at the door. You’ll leave with your art, a list of Houston area labyrinths, and a handout on walking labyrinths.

What's Your Purpose?

This is the class for you if you are wondering what your purpose in life is! Join Gandhari Bouligny and me (Sarah Gish) on Saturday, March 2 from 3-5pm at Body Mind & Soul as we talk to you about ways to catch your dreams and uncover who you really are, using tools from astrology as well as personal intuition in this two-hour, hands-on workshop. We’ll start out dancing (yes, we will!) and then each participant will learn about their special astrological characteristics and will be given their life path number (using numerology) from Gandhari. I will guide everyone with salient questions and information from Ayurvedic philosophies designed to open your mind to who you really are – physically and in your soul – and what you really want to do with your life. All of these activities will lead to writing a personal mission statement.

Each class member will walk away with a better understanding of themselves and their life vision and concrete ideas on how to become who they are truly meant to be. You’ll also take home your written PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT. It’ll be a wonderful way to spend two hours, just on YOU! Click here to register.

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. It’s #GishPicks #CuratedCulture to help you plan your weekend! I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
