Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

We are all about Super Bowl LI, aren’t we?! It’s here and there ain’t no stopping us now. If you’re not really into the Bowl, check out my non-football PICKS below. However, if you want to get into the thick of things, there are a few fun ways to jump in. The “NFL Experience” at the George R. Brown Convention Center features a pro football interactive theme park with participatory games, youth football clinics, merchandise from the NFL Shop, and autograph sessions with NFL players and Legends. Tickets for that start at $25. Over at Discovery Green, you can enjoy a free ongoing festival, Super Bowl Live, with live music and performances, interactive exhibits, great food, and a 90-foot tall virtual reality trip to Mars – plus the winter ice skating rink is still open. And for those of you who like to party sober-style, here’s a perfect event: the free-n-fun Sober Bowl Super Fest, which starts out with yoga at 11am (yes! yoga!) followed by music and big screen game watching. That party is at the brand new White Oak Music Hall, so it’s a great excuse for you to check out that venue.

Have a great weekend, love one another, please share this, and go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of February 3-5, 2017
Picks for Adults the Weekend of February 3-5, 2017

Lunar New Year Houston

It’s the Lunar New Year so several Asian communities have gotten together to celebrate the Year of the Red Fire Rooster this Saturday, February 4 and Sunday, February 5 in a free festival at the Viet Hoa Center. You’ll get to see lions and dragons and one million Lucky Red firecrackers!

Round 45: Local Impact

The current exhibition at Project Row Houses, Round 45: Local Impact,” is on view just another week (closing next Sunday, February 12) so stop by soon. This round highlights seven individual artists producing installations and public programs relating to African-American history and pop culture – and much more – while using radical imagination as a means of healing.

Houston Boychoir Sing4Life

This Saturday, February 4 at 4pm, the Houston Boychoir presents a special Sing4Life concert at Grace Presbyterian Church. The Boychoir was founded in 1962 as a project of the Houston Independent School District but became a separate nonprofit in 1991.

The Ensemble Theatre presents Mahalia,” onstage through February 26 – with shows this Friday, February 3 and Saturday, February 4 at 8pm. “Mahalia” is the tale of Martin Luther King’s friend Mahalia Jackson – “the world’s greatest gospel singer” – who became the musical voice of the civil rights movement.

The Space Between Us

On the first Saturday of each month, the Santikos Silverado/Tomball and the Santikos Palladium/Richmond offer sensory-friendly family films at 11am. This Saturday, February 4, the Martian film The Space Between Us is the featured attraction.

The Moth

This isn’t for the weekend but I just *had to* include it. I dared myself to try out storytelling recently so I went to The Moth to spin a tale about my visit to Detroit last summer. What a fun night! This month’s theme is Love Hurts – a great way to kick off Valentine’s month with a twist. The doors open at 6:30pm.

GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS is a free weekly email in which I cull through the HUNDREDS of events offered in our city each week and PICK just three for adults and three for kids to recommend. It’s #GishPicks #CuratedCulture to help you plan your weekend! I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on GISH PICKS? You can promote cultural events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are curious individuals, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support. If you'd like to learn more, please click below.

Exploring your city is a great way to #IgniteYourOwnLife and we are so happy to help you do that. Please do give me feedback and ideas, as you are out there in the trenches also looking for interesting things and I want to hear what you find.
