Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting! AND – lucky you, I’ll be posting them here as my weekly VIDEO PICK when I can.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKSand our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Next Monday, February 5 is the deadline to register to vote in the March 6 Texas primaries. PLEASE VOTE and encourage others to do the same – every single election is important. Our votes are our voice and our voices need to be heard by Congress and the White House and our government on every level, now more than ever. Click here to register to vote and get a ton of information by cell phone and here – Harris Votes – for more about voting in Harris county. And if you want a terrific non-partisan resource about the issues and candidates, check out what the League of Women Voters of the Houston Area have to offer.

There are some cool events coming up soon, in addition to those listed below (aren’t there always so many great events?!). There’s this thing called the Super Bowl that people go crazy over (not me, however!). If you are a football fan and want to enjoy the game without booze, check out the Sober Bowl, presented by The Ark, an organization that supports sobriety and creativity. It’s a cool event at Hughes Manor on Washington that will feature NFL folks like Earl Campbell and several big screen TVs, lots of snacks, fun games, and more. Another fun event for a good cause – but with alcohol! – is Cabernet and Cabaret” next Tuesday, February 6 at Music Box Theater, where MBT singers will entertain the crowd with everything from a “Hamilton: The American Musical” song to music by Queen. It’s a night to benefit Houston COMPASS, Inc., an organization that assists the disadvantaged and unemployed in gaining direction and control over their lives.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Picks for Adults the Weekend of February 2-4, 2018

It’s a book, it’s a movie, and now the play version of Holes is being presented by Main Street Theater’s Youth Theater through February 18 at MATCH Houston. Holes is an entertaining story that takes place at a boys’ detention center, where digging holes become a metaphor for life and so much more. It’s written by Texan Louis Sachar, who is based in Austin.

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying

I usually put productions by high schoolers on my KID PICKS round-up, but this show has some mature themes and is most suited for kids over 13 years old and adults. How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is a tongue-in-cheek musical (straight from Broadway!) about a young mail clerk who is determined to move up the ladder at the World Wide Wicket Company. Get your tickets here for shows at Lamar High School on Thursday, February 1 at 6pm and Friday (February 2) and Saturday (February 3) at 7pm.

Family Comedy and Magic Show

The first Saturday of each month, Improv hosts a Family Comedy and Magic Show for all ages that is super fun and inexpensive ($10/ticket). The next performance is this Saturday, February 3 at 2pm (doors open at 1pm) and you can purchase tickets here.

First Thursdays

Join film lovers and filmmakers for "First Thursdays" on the back patio at Brasil – the next one is tomorrow February 1 at 8:30pm (arrive early for socializing!). These FREE short film evenings are always a great networking opportunity or simply a chance to get together with Houston filmmakers and creative people while watching one-of-a-kind films curated by the Houston Film Commission.

MFAH Sunday Family Zone

This Sunday, February 4, from 1-4pm, the Museum of Fine Arts is hosting its monthly Sunday Family Zone and the February theme is “Compelling Creations: Discovering 19th-Century European Design.” Families are invited to drop in and enjoy a variety of games, activities, books, and mini-tours of the galleries. The event is free with museum admission (become a member here!)

Best of Enemies

The amazing true story of the friendship between a black Civil Rights activist and a white KKK member is told in Best of Enemies,” onstage at the beautiful new A.D. Players theatre through Sunday, February 4. I saw it last weekend and was extremely moved by the presentation and the story’s connection to our current racial tensions. This is a “must see”!

Cabernet & Cabaret

Are you wondering what you should be doing with your life? We can help you! Gandhari Bouligny and I will be presenting What’s Your Purpose? at Body Mind & Soul on Sunday, February 4 from 2-4pm. It’s a great way to re-focus your life in only 2 hours! Plus it’s fun – we dance, you create, and you’ll get your astrological information. You will walk out with a personal mission statement and a much better understanding of who you are.

I offer intuitive guidance sessions every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 10am-5:30pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. Let’s connect if you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both). I use my intuitive skills and my many years of studying people to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams and desires, and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. Finding your personal mission will exponentially increase your ability to succeed in life while also attracting an abundance of joy. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at ‪713.993.0550 to book an appointment.

And I’m pleased to announce that my Second Saturday Labyrinth Walks will continue at the Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston at 500 Prairie Street. My next walk will be on Saturday, February 10, 9am-11am. Free parking is available in the Christ Church Cathedral garage at 559 San Jacinto Street; bring your ticket in to get it validated.
