Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, please GO.FIND.FUN. wherever you can, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Houston is always full of multi-cultural cultural offerings and this weekend is no exception! Be sure to check out my PICKS below focused on the Lunar New Year for families at the Asia Society Texas Center and the Apollo Chamber Players concert, “Venezuelan Folkways,” that includes a string quartet by Hungarian composer Béla Bartók and Venezuelan folk music with Houston-based violinist Eddy Marcano, who is featured in this week’s VIDEO PICK. By the way, if you want to dive deep into the meaning of “The Year of the Rat,” I really like this website. According to them, in China rats are seen as a sign of wealth as well as contentment. Bring on the abundance and peace!

Are you curious about the practice of yoga? There are a couple of fun ways to enjoy it this weekend, which are featured in both the kids and adults PICKS. One yoga event is in a beer hall and the other offers mindfulness and creativity for kids...ah the yin and yang of it all! If you would like to explore other spots for yoga in Houston, check out this excellent roundup. And one of my fave zen places (where I lead four labyrinth walks a year) is The Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer. They offer yoga almost daily (see the schedule here) and this Saturday (January 25) is their special Kinetic Vibez workshop, a yoga/meditation/hip-hop jam for kids.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Stay tuned here for more details! My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for FAMILY PICKS and our Facebook page for ADULT PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me: I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of January 24 - 26, 2020
Picks for Adults the Weekend of January 24 - 26, 2020

Asia Society Texas Center

This Saturday, January 25 from 11am-4pm, the Asia Society is hosting a free family event to celebrate the Lunar New Year 2020 and the Year of the Rat - and they have planned so many wonderful things! There will be performances (traditional lion dances and more) as well as fun and unique art and craft activities, story time, and ticketed performances at noon and 2pm. And I’ve been told there will be LOTS of food and drink for sale. Please RSVP here for planning purposes.

Apollo Chamber Players

This Saturday, January 25 at 7:30pm (Q&A at 7pm), the Apollo Chamber Players presents “Venezuelan Folkways” as they welcome Latin Grammy-winning violinist (and new Houstonian) Eddy Marcano for a program featuring new arrangements of Venezuelan folk music. Continuing their Bartók string quartet cycle, they will then highlight the Hungarian composer’s exuberantly primal fourth string quartet, considered to be among his greatest compositions and most deeply connected to his lifelong exploration of folk music. These concerts are always interesting and diverse - purchase your $10-$35 tickets here and enjoy!

Wild Spirit Yoga

Every Saturday (including this Saturday, January 25) through April 4, Wild Spirit Yoga is offering Kids Yoga + Art at 10am. These drop in classes introduce kids 7-12 years old to basic yoga concepts through stories, music, dance, and art. In a fun creative atmosphere, students will be exposed to mudras, asanas, deep breathing, relaxation, and visualization. The fee is $20/one class or $60/4 class package. Wild Spirit Yoga is in a 1940s converted bunk house and they often hold community yoga events in their backyard garden.

Pitch 25 Beer Park

Who says yoga and beer don’t mix?! The folks at Pitch 25 decided to mix ‘em up by expanding beyond traditional fare at a sports bar to offer “Free Yoga Sundays” on their indoor soccer field from 10-11am, including this Sunday, January 26. Afterwards, stay for brunch and games -- and there is a pop-up market, lively DJs, and additional fitness classes once a month. The name combines the reference to a football pitch (or soccer field) and former Dynamo star and co-founder Brian Ching's jersey number, 25.

Houston Maritime Museum

Stop by the Houston Maritime Museum this Saturday, January 25 from noon-4pm to celebrate their one year anniversary at their new location in the East End (which I wrote about here). Families will be able to explore boats in the parking lot, contribute to their new community sail project, and challenge themselves on rowing machines. At noon, a special walking tour of the East End will commence from the museum. The Museum hosts “Family Days” on select Saturdays each month; more about this month’s event is here.

FAUSA Houston and Love People Not Pixels

FAUSA Houston and Love People Not Pixels present “Defending the Defenseless,” this Saturday, January 25 from 7-9pm at Archway Gallery. The evening is dedicated to ending human trafficking in Houston and is timed to coincide with “National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.” Representatives from the FBI Human Trafficking Task Force will lead a discussion about the problem and provide ways citizens can help. Reps from Love People Not Pixels will explain how to confront illegal businesses in our community as well as how to change legislation.

Women will gather in community with me at the Spectrum Center Houston for 6 Mondays from 6:30-8pm to explore their personal life path using the “12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily” concepts from my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project. You can see the 12 concepts here and the key words which we’ll explore through a variety of ways are TRUST * NOURISH * MEDITATE * COMMUNE * LISTEN * LOVE * SERVE * FORGIVE * THANK * CREATE * LEARN * LAUGH. You’ll dig deep with this focused time on YOU and self-love will be at the center of all we do. There will be art, journaling, talking, laughing, labyrinth-walking, and more! At the first meeting, you’ll be given a journal and a special set of the 12 Ways cards to use daily. Each woman will also create an easy-to-remember personal mantra to use and, during the last session, will make a bracelet with her favorite word of the 12 to take home.

The cost for the series is $200 ($205 if paying via credit card; no fee if you pay via Zelle or Venmo). If you’re interested, please email me and I’d love to have you join us!
