Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

Speaking of Friday, please join me for my weekly PICKS-ON-WHEELS in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Each Friday at noon, I’ll be at a different cool place – meeting people, introducing what they do and their mission, and wandering around. It’s my way of bringing GISH PICKS to life! Tune in on Fridays here. It is TOTALLY fun and I’d love for you to see them and join in by liking and commenting! AND – lucky you, I’ll be posting them here as my weekly VIDEO PICK when I can.

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKSand our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Happy New Year to you! Don’t you just love the fresh start a new number brings?! I am happy 2018 has kicked off but I am still dragging part of 2017 with me – specifically our Christmas tree, ahem. If you also have yours – don’t throw it away! – participate in the City of Houston recycling program, in place through January 15, or the Brazoria County recycling program, in place through January 20. And if you’d like to still enjoy holiday events, there are a few stragglers: the Houston Zoo has their “Zoo Lights” through January 14; you can enjoy ice skating at Discovery Green through January 21; and the Woodlands Ice Rink is open through January 15.

Inprint is hosting their first Cool Brains! reading for kids with a special treat: they will be giving away 200 books to the first families that come to their event with author Ann M. Martin this Sunday, January 14. All the details are here and below. And – for something a little different, please enjoy this week’s VIDEO PICK, a darling banjo band in Houston with kids!

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Rain Reign

This Sunday, January 14 at 3pm (doors open at 2:30pm), enjoy an afternoon with Newbery Honor Award winner Ann M. Martin as part of Cool Brains! Inprint Readings for Young People. There will be 200 free signed copies of her book Rain Reign; a conversation with Ann and the reading; and Hurricane Harvey dog rescue stories. The New York Times bestseller is a powerful story about Rose Howard, a girl on the autism spectrum, the dog she loves, and a hurricane that changes everything.

Art and Vintage Fest

EaDo Houston kicks off the new year with their monthly Art and Vintage Fest this Sunday, January 14, noon-6pm at 4009 Polk Street. This fun event features local art and Karbach Brewing Company beers; families and pets are welcome!

Peter and the Wolf

Peter and the Wolf is coming to the Houston Zoo for three *free* performances on Sunday, January 14 (2pm, 3pm, 4pm) at the Houston Zoo. Perhaps the wolves at the zoo will enjoy the music about a wolf?! Sergei Prokofiev’s classic children’s tale is refreshed in this production, complete with new costume materials donated by Magpies and Peacocks.

The Color Purple

The Color Purple is coming to the Hobby Center from January 9-14. This exhilarating story of a young woman’s journey to love and triumph in the American south features jazz, gospel, ragtime, and blues in a special production. Tickets are $35-$165 and can be purchased here.

Lunch at the Library

The Houston Public Library is offering free meals for kids 1-18 years old – if you don’t need this service, please tell others! The nutritious packed lunches are prepared and delivered daily to 8 schools almost every week day, after school. All the details and the schedules can be found here.

Scaped Senses

Scaped Senses is an interactive civic art installation of an outdoor labyrinth on display daily from dawn to dusk through January 19 at 3517 Irvington Boulevard (across From Moody Park in the northside). Community workshops created 1,700 painted PVC grass strands and YES Prep East End students created signs for the project. It was conceived by artists Nicola Parente and Tami Merrick and funded by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

The Guide to Good Divorce

“Divorce is rarely easy, yet navigating those rough waters can be easier with sufficient knowledge, preparation, and support,” explains Trey Yates, a Houston based, board-certified family law attorney. He’s the founder of The Guide to Good Divorce, a nonprofit that presents seminars that are designed to help women at all stages of the divorce process. Uniquely qualified experts on the law of divorce in Texas, divorce financial planning, life skills, and physical and spiritual wellness will provide attendees with vital information to help them create a plan of action.

The Guide to Good Divorce also provides opportunities for women facing divorce to network and connect with each other by building new communities for support. Says Trey, “I have witnessed many women draw strength, comfort, and encouragement from our seminars and each other as they transition out of a marriage and into a new phase of their lives.” Yates has practiced family law in the greater Houston Metropolitan Area since 1986.

The first seminar of 2018 is Saturday, January 27 from 8:30am-2pm at the Houstonian, 111 N. Post Oak Lane; please register for that here (sign up now, spots fill up fast!). The fee is $97 and includes a light brunch starting at 8:30am; the session starts promptly at 9am. If you can’t make the January seminar, the other 2018 seminars will be on Saturdays – April 28, July 28, and September 22. Please check the website; details will be posted after the January seminar.

I’m pleased to announce that my Second Saturday Labyrinth Walks will continue at the Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston, 500 Prairie Street. My first walk of 2018 will be this Saturday, January 13, 9am-11am (note new, earlier time!). Free parking is available in the Christ Church Cathedral garage at 559 San Jacinto Street; bring your ticket in to get it validated.

Gandhari Bouligny and I will be presenting What’s Your Purpose at Body Mind & Soul on Sunday, February 4 from 2-4pm. It’s a great way to re-focus your life in only 2 hours! Plus it’s fun – we dance, you create, and you’ll get your astrological information. You will walk out with a personal mission statement and a much better understanding of who you are.

And one last thing: I offer intuitive guidance sessions every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 10am-5:30pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. Let’s connect if you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both). I use my intuitive skills and my many years of studying people to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams and desires, and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. Finding your personal mission will exponentially increase your ability to succeed in life while also attracting an abundance of joy. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at ‪713.993.0550 to book an appointment.
