Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on special gems and unique Houston fun. I love this city and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered each weekend and PICK only three for FAMILIES and three for ADULTS to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits! If you’re new here, please read below for more about this blog and then check out my PICKS for this weekend, further below.

Have a great weekend and please love one another, please share this, please GO.FIND.FUN. wherever you can, and please – go IGNITE YOUR LIFE!

Why hello 2020...and new decade! It’s time to switch out those calendars and super clean your homes and git ready for another fabulous year! Thanks for being a GISH PICKS reader as I enter my 16th year of writing this blog! Wowsa. It’s been a blast and an honor and I am grateful to all of you who read this and all of you who share it with others. I’m especially grateful that you support the arts organizations I highlight as PICKS. Supporting the arts keeps the arts alive.

I don’t know about you but I’m not crazy about New Year’s resolutions. In fact, I never make them. I try to approach each new year with optimism and excitement and I think about what I’d like for the year ahead. My healthy habits that were misplaced over the holidays return - and I enjoy Houston’s farmers markets (you can see a fab farmacy PICK below!). And I contemplate my recovery with gratitude: with the help of many people, I got sober 35 years ago on January 8th (today!) and that’s a reminder of what my life used to be like at the start of each new year (by the way, January 8 is also the shared birthday of 2 of my fave musicians, David Bowie and Elvis - how fun is that?!).

In this week’s VIDEO PICK, I chatted with Deborah Duncan of Great Day Houston about igniting your 2020 with labyrinth walks, vision boards, and my small women’s group, as well as my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project. You can see details about the events below. I especially hope you’ll join me for my walk this Saturday - if you’re feeling any anxiety about this new year, it’s a great place to release it!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 150 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Because of that, I decided back in 2004 to start sharing my adventures in Houston and my knowledge of it with others via GISH PICKS. And, since 2016, I have been bringing it to life with my PICKS-ON-WHEELS Facebook Live segments in which I travel around our city in my Phoenix Rising Art Car. Stay tuned here for more details! My adventures will sometimes be posted as my weekly VIDEO PICK in this blog.

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for FAMILY PICKS and our Facebook page for ADULT PICKS. Click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me: I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support.

And, last but not least: this blog is free to you, my dear reader, but it’s not free for me to produce. I pay my designer and I spend many hours researching, compiling, and writing GISH PICKS each week. If you have an event you’d like me to PICK, please email me and let’s see how I can help. With me on your team, you’ll reach thousands of Houstonians in a quick-and-easy way!

Picks for Kids the Weekend of January 10 - 12, 2020
Picks for Adults the Weekend of January 10 - 12, 2020

Archaeology Now

Here’s a free event for kids that is fun AND educational: join the cool org Archaeology Now at their annual free “Ancient Games Tournament” at Memorial City Mall this Saturday, January 11 from 10am-5pm. Kids will get to experience 4,000 years of games from around the world in a day, and families can purchase replicas of many of the games at the nearby Blue Willow Bookshop gift shop. All ages and skill levels welcome.

Houston Farmers Market & Urban Harvest

I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions but I do believe each new year is a great time to get healthy! Houston is lucky to have MANY farmers markets and I want to highlight two organizations that bring us some of the best fruits and veggies around: the Houston Farmers Market is a large-scale renovation of Canino’s Market that was started in the 1940s, and Urban Harvest runs a few markets that are listed here.

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is hosting a series of special events for 3-5 year olds called “Little Artists,” which will take place this Friday and Saturday (January 10 and 11) at 10:30am; see the website for other upcoming dates. Children and their adult caregivers will learn about the materials and processes artists used to create the works of art seen throughout the Museum. This program includes a storybook circle, multisensory play, and more. It’s $6/child for MFAH members and $8/child for nonmembers.

Spindle Tap Brewery

It might be cold outside but this event is always warm! This Saturday, January 11 starting at 11am is the Annual Hops ‘N Hot Sauce Festival, benefitting Addi’s Faith Foundation. Featured will be samples from over 65 vendors of hot sauces, salsas, jams and jellies, seasonings, jerky, spicy pickles, and more (YUM!). They’ll have a Hot Pepper Eating Contest, a Pizza de Muerte Eating Challenge, and a live cooking demo. The indoor, kid-friendly event will also feature bounce houses and games.

Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center

Enjoy the outdoors with a special “Pioneer Campfirethis Saturday, January 11 from 5:30-6:30pm. Spend an evening around the campfire as renowned storyteller Dan Gordon leads an interactive journey through “Adventures in Storyland.” Reservations are required so call 832.927.4444 or email as soon as possible since their events fill up quickly. Jones Park is a premier 312-acre Harris County Precinct 4 nature preserve open daily to visitors free of charge.

St. Luke's United Methodist Church

The Tapestry Players of St. Luke’s UMC present “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” from January 9-12 at their Rotunda Theater. It’s a unique show in which the audience gets to solve a mystery in this hilarious musical adaptation of Charles Dickens's final (and unfinished) novel. Since Dickens left no clues about the ending before he died, the actors will invite the audience to decide “whodunit.” Tickets are $25/general admission and $15/students with ID.

LIFE PATH SESSIONS (Mondays) and LABYRINTH WALKS (Second Saturdays)

I offer intuitive "Life Path Sessions" every Monday at Body Mind & Soul ‪from 11:00am-5:00pm and I would love to help Y-O-U. If you are wondering what to do with your life, whether it’s in the personal realm or the professional arena (or both), I will serve as your Life Path Guide. One session is all you need to get ignited! I use my intuitive skills and my many years of reading people to help you FOCUS – on you, your dreams and desires, and how to manifest them. And if you don’t know what your passions are, I will guide you in discovering them. I also help people who are struggling with ANY kind of issue they may encounter along life’s path: grief, relationship problems, work troubles, etc. My goal is to help people listen to their heart and to connect with sources of inspiration or guidance or support. Sessions are $100/hour and $50/thirty minutes and take place at the store – 7951 Katy Freeway. Call them at713.993.0550 to book an appointment.

Join me this Saturday, January 11, from 10am-noon for my next monthly Second Saturday Labyrinth Walk at the beautiful Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer in downtown Houston. We’ll tour the center, walk the labyrinth, and make art. I am a trained labyrinth facilitator and love sharing what I know with others! You’ll leave with your art, a list of Houston area labyrinths, and a handout on walking labyrinths as well as a sense of well-being and peace. Meditation does that to you! The other walks for 2020 will be April 11, July 11, and November 14. The walks are donation-based and I hope you’ll feel moved to give as it helps cover our costs of producing this event.

Women will gather in community with me at the Spectrum Center Houston for 6 Mondays from 6:30-8pm to explore their personal life path using the “12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily” concepts from my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project. You can see the 12 concepts here and the key words which we’ll explore through a variety of ways are TRUST * NOURISH * MEDITATE * COMMUNE * LISTEN * LOVE * SERVE * FORGIVE * THANK * CREATE * LEARN * LAUGH. You’ll dig deep with this focused time on YOU and self-love will be at the center of all we do. There will be art, journaling, talking, laughing, labyrinth-walking, and more! At the first meeting, you’ll be given a journal and a special set of the 12 Ways cards to use daily. Each woman will also create an easy-to-remember personal mantra to use and, during the last session, will make a bracelet with her favorite word of the 12 to take home.

The cost for the series is $200 ($205 if paying via credit card; no fee if you pay via Zelle or Venmo). If you’re interested, please email me and I’d love to have you join us!
