Welcome to GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS AND ADULTS! I’m Sarah Gish, an info-preneur and culture sleuth who finds the unusual and cool in Houston each and every week. Join me as I shine a light on Houston gems and unique Houston fun. I love Houston and want to show you the people and the places and the events that make it great (see more about my wishes for that here). And I want to make it easy for you so I sort through the cornucopia of events offered in our wonderful city each weekend and I PICK only three each for families and adults to recommend to you. That way you’ll be all set when Friday hits!

We are the most diverse city in the country, not only because of the over 100 languages spoken here every day, but also because of the diversity of events offered and places to hang our (cowboy) hats. Please be sure to tell your friends about GISH PICKS – the more people who know about these unique cultural events, the more unique cultural events the organizations will offer us. Please also tell the orgs that I sent you. My business grows by word of mouth so I thank you for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of GISH PICKS!

A note about the social media for GISH PICKS: please LIKE our Facebook page for family PICKS and our Facebook page for adult PICKS. Be sure to click “See first” in the dropdown menu on the LIKE button so you won’t miss a post! And please follow me on Instagram and Twitter. You’ll get all my CULTURE PICKS and more that way. And there’s one last way to stay in touch with me! I organize many events, such as labyrinth walks and workshops, so if you’d like to be informed of those before everyone else, please subscribe to my Gish Creative list here.

Happy New Year! I just love January – it’s full of possibilities and promise. I may not always achieve all that I set out to do for the year, but at least I get to get a new calendar, a new perspective, and another opportunity to de-clutter. Fresh starts are good. Something new I’m starting this year is a monthly column with Natural Awakenings Magazine (Houston), a wonderful spiritual and health publication that I encourage you to check out, in print at spots all over Houston and online. I’ll be writing about my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project, expounding on one of my “Twelve Ways to Ignite Your Life!” in each article. The first way is “Trust in spirit.” and you can find this month’s article here. Please enjoy!

This Sunday, January 8, is David Bowie’s birthday and next Tuesday, January 10 is the one year anniversary of his death. I chose this week’s VIDEO PICK in honor of those milestones – it’s not a great video but it shows Madonna in concert here and several iconic photos of Bowie (my VIDEO PICKS are always Houston-centric). “He showed me it’s ok to be different,” said Madonna – we need that, especially in these times! There are some great Bowie tribute events this weekend and I’ve listed them below. Click here for a fun look at photos of Bowie concerts in Houston throughout the years.

Next Tuesday there are a couple of other, non-Bowie events to check out. The Moth is onstage for its monthly second Tuesday gig – the theme is VOYAGE and I might even tell a story of travels in my Phoenix Rising Art Car! More about The Moth/VOYAGE event is here. Also next Tuesday is “National Geographic Live” at Jones Hall – it’s a new speaker series presented by the Houston Symphony on Tuesday evenings that sounds fascinating; Coral Kingdoms and Empires of Ice is the topic.

Have a great weekend, go IGNITE YOUR LIFE, please share this, and please – LOVE ONE ANOTHER.

Picks for Kids the Weekend of January 6-8, 2017
Picks for Adults the Weekend of January 6-8, 2017

Crowns from the Garden

On the first Saturday of each month, the Craft Museum hosts “Hands-On Houston,” a free craft activity for families. This Saturday, January 7 from 11am-3pm, celebrate Houston’s ever-green winter by joining current resident artist Rebecca Braziel to create simple but beautiful crowns using plant materials from HCCC’s Craft Garden in their Crowns from the Garden event.

A Designated Mourner

It’s a crazy time in our country’s political history so Catastrophic Theatre felt it was important to present a very limited, off-season run of Wallace Shawn's masterwork, The Designated Mourner at the MATCH until January 15. Through a series of intertwining, confessional monologues, three characters reveal the harrowing details of a popular uprising against arbiters of high art in an unnamed country.

Lisa Loeb

Hipster singer/author/songwriter Lisa Loeb is coming to Emanu El for a free concert this Sunday, January 8 from 10-11am. Inspiring kids with creative sing-along fun ever since her first children's book, Lisa Loeb's Silly Sing-Along: The Disappointing Pancake and Other Zany Songs, was released, Lisa’s unconventional and whimsical spirit will delight the whole family.

David Bowie

Several orgs are hosting tributes in honor of David Bowie’s birth and death – this Saturday, January 7 starting at 7:30pm, Numbers is hosting a birthday bash and a screening of “The Man Who Fell to Earth”; Cactus Music is holding a Happy Birthday David Bowie Sidewalk Chalk Art Tribute on Sunday, January 8 from noon-6pm; and the David Bowie 70th Birthday Bash is at Big Star Bar on Sunday, January 8 from 6-10pm.

Festa della Befana 2017

This Sunday, January 8 at 4pm, grab the kids and head over to the Italian Cultural and Community Center for the Festa della Befana 2017.” Enjoy gifts, panettone, hot chocolate, and fun for children of all ages. In Italian folklore, Befana is an old woman who delivers gifts to children throughout Italy on Epiphany Eve (the night of January 5) in a similar way to Santa Claus.

Houston Swing Dance Society

On Sunday nights, the Eldorado Ballroom is hopping with swing dancers doing the Lindy Hop and the Six-Count Swing from 6-10pm and they offer a complementary class for first-timers (members dance for free anytime). Coming up on January 21 is the Rock Step Your Resolution workshop at SSQQ in the Heights.
