Hello dear GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS & ADULTS reader!
I hope this email finds you well and settling into this unique pandemic holiday. It’ll be different this year, but I plan to focus on the many ways I am grateful. This is my last blog about WINTER DAY CAMPS, so make your plan and sign ‘em up. That way you AND your kiddos can enjoy this winter. I’ve picked four special camps and highly recommend them all.
Speaking of holidays, I’ll be doing a short-and-sweet holiday round-up blog next week, so be sure to check that out. I’ll be talking about my virtual and in person PICKS on Great Day Houston next Tuesday, December 15, so tune in if you can. There are a couple of holiday events I want to tell you about right now that are COVID-safe and organized with the City of Houston. Hannukah started yesterday, and this Sunday, December 13, there will be a virtual lighting of the Menorah at Houston City Hall this Sunday, December 13 at 5pm. Click here for all the details and the Zoom link. And the city recently presented the annual “Reliant Lights Mayor’s Holiday Spectacular” -- the City Hall tree lighting event – as a local hometown variety show that celebrates the holidays in Houston. A one-hour version of the original, live show will be aired on ABC13 on Friday, December 18 from 7-8pm.
I’m excited to share with you a 12 year old video, below! Yes indeed...I was on Great Day Houston in 2008 talking about meaningful holidays, and I was so happy to see that its message still resonates with me today, even in this pandemic year. I told host Deborah Duncan about “affluenza,” a state in which we are grabby and materialistic, and my ways to combat that “disease.” Those ways still hold true with me today! My 20 year-old actor son always gives me a monologue performance. And my 25 year-old computer whiz son always gives me some kind of coupon for a service (last year was a back massage!). Deborah and I talked about the holidays being about the time and not the toys, and the difference between wants and needs. I said this season is about MAGIC, JOY, EXCITEMENT, and SPIRITUALITY. I thanked myself-back-then for reminding me today of that. By the way, Deborah and I look *exactly* the same!
In case you’re reading this and you don’t know me, I’m a mama of two sons and an info-preneur who LOVES to share what I know about family fun, day camps, and Houston arts...something I’ve been doing since 2003! You can see more about me here. As an augment to my GISH PICKS weekly blog about the best in Houston arts and culture, many years ago I created CAMP PICKS so that I could PICK the best in day camps for kids during school holidays (spring break, summer, Thanksgiving, winter).
One last thing - if you got this from a friend or are seeing it online and aren’t a GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS & ADULTS subscriber, please go to www.GishPicks.com and sign up. Be sure to choose the KIDS list so you’ll get all my family PICKS. And, as your kids grow up, feel free to update your subscription (in the footer of each email) so that you only get ADULT PICKS. I’d love to have you along for the arts & culture ride!
